Culturally Responsive Services: From Competence to Humility

Many service providers have been taught the value of cultural competence in working with diverse populations. Indeed, cross-cultural clinical work is a frequent occurrence when serving communities of people with marginalized identities. This training presents the concept of cultural humility as supplemental to the work of cultural competence. Presenters will offer strategies to move beyond the idea that we can ever truly become competent in another person’s culture, and explore opportunities to affirm and support our clients. Through use of case studies, we will review concepts of intersectionality and micro-aggressions for a fuller understanding of the ways culture shows up in service provision, and offer tools for a humbler cultural practice.

What is UBIT Anyway & How Much is Too Much?

PANO

Wednesday, July 17 1:30-3:00pm

Financially squeezed nonprofits often seek to generate new revenue through new business ventures. But such efforts can carry serious legal, as well as economic, risks. This webinar will explore the unrelated business income tax (UBIT), how to define it, how to avoid it, and how to deal with the consequences of having "too much" of it.

Regularly badgered by Congress to limit "unfair" competition with for-profit businesses, the Internal Revenue Service consistently looks to impose UBIT on unrelated business taxable income at nonprofit organizations, including facility rentals and travel tours at large institutions like colleges and universities, revenue from joint ventures with for-profits, gift shop income from museums, investment income from anyone's margin account, advertising revenue from small nonprofit organization newsletters, and everything in between. Nonprofits with substantial unrelated business income will have to pay substantial unrelated business income tax - and could even lose their tax-exempt status. This session will provide a basic understanding of the UBIT rules, give tips on structuring activities to avoid the revenue being classified as unrelated business income, allocating expenses to reduce net income, and restructuring to avoid the adverse consequences of "too much" of a winning commercial venture.

Avoiding the Adverse Consequences of UBIT

Accelerating Health Equity by Addressing Social and Structural Determinants of Health

July 17-18

Social determinants (or influencers) of health are the conditions in which people are born, grow, work, live, and age, and the wider set of structural and political forces and systems shaping the conditions of daily life. Some estimate that nearly 80% of physical and mental health outcomes are driven by social determinants. While the Philadelphia Trauma Training Conference focuses each year on the positive and negative ways that communities and other social contexts impact health outcomes, they are calling out a more intentional focus on determinants of health this year given the number of health and behavioral health systems prioritizing this work.

Paul Miller’s Law is In Effect

Governor Josh Shapiro signed Senate Bill 37 – known as Paul Miller’s Law – into law on June 5, prohibiting the use of hand-held devices while driving. This bipartisan legislation makes Pennsylvania the 29th state in the nation to ban distracted driving. Paul Miller’s Law allows law enforcement to issue a ticket when a driver uses a cell phone while driving. Drivers can still use their phones to alert emergency responders and to make phone calls, use a GPS, and listen to music if they are using hands-free technology. …

“In 2023, there were over 11,000 crashes in Pennsylvania that involved a distracted driver,” said PennDOT Secretary Mike Carroll. Learn more! Thank you to TMA Bucks for sharing!

Divided Supreme Court rules in major homelessness case that outdoor sleeping bans are OK, Philadelphia Inquirer

"The Supreme Court cleared the way for cities to enforce bans on homeless people sleeping outside in public places on Friday, overturning a ruling from a California-based appeals court that found such laws amount to cruel and unusual punishment when shelter space is lacking.

The case is the high court’s most significant ruling on the issue in decades and comes as a rising number of people in the U.S. are without a permanent place to live." Read more, with opportunities for local advocacy to come. #Housingnothandcuffs

Housing Alliance of PA &

The Out of Reach 2024 report shows that despite rising wages, cooling inflation, and low unemployment, low-wage workers and other renters continue to struggle with the high cost of rent. Explore the full Out of Reach 2024: The High Cost of Housing report and its interactive website with its easy-to-use search function for Out of Reach data by metropolitan-area ZIP codes.

Released annually by the National Low Income Housing Coalition, Out of Reach illuminates the gulf between wages and what people need to earn to afford their rents. The report’s “Housing Wage” is an estimate of the hourly wage full-time workers must earn to afford a rental home at fair market rent without spending more than 30% of their incomes.

The Bucks County Home Repair Program (BCHRP) now accepting applications

BCHRP is a resource available to low-moderate income Bucks County homeowners that provides qualifying households with up to $50,000 for home repairs and modifications. Bucks County aims to bring necessary repairs to between 120 and 150 owner-occupied homes. Common eligible repairs include roofing, plumbing, electrical systems, heating and accessibility modifications such as ramps and grab bars. Applications will be accepted online until 11:59 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 15. Mailed applications must be postmarked by that date. All applications begin with a pre-application review of general eligibility questions which must be submitted before 11:59 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 6. Any pre-application submissions after this date are not guaranteed to be considered in this round of applications.

BCHRP is a nearly $10 million initiative, combining contributions from the Commonwealth's Whole-Home Repair Program (WHRP) and the Bucks County Commissioners' contribution of State and Local Fiscal Relief Funds to increase the number of households served and maximize program impact. The program is being implemented by Capital Access, Inc. and Habit for Humanity of Bucks County. Funds for approved projects will be disbursed directly to approved BCHRP General Contractors. Fifty percent of the funds will be provided as a grant, while the remaining fifty percent will be a deferred payment loan, which carries no periodic interest or principal payments.

To assist with the application process, BCHRP will host two in-person application sessions at Habitat for Humanity of Bucks County, 539 Jacksonville Road, #100, Warminster:
