Thursday, July 22, 7:00 pm, Zoom
Join us for the new NCJW Movie Club. Be part of the new core group! Watch the movie first, then come to share your reactions with members on Thursday, July 22, 2021.

Born on the Fourth of July is a 1989 American biographical antiwar drama based on the 1976 autobiography by Ron Kovic starring Tom Cruise, Kyra Sedgwick, and Willem Dafoe. It depicts 20 years in the life of Kovic (Cruise), detailing his childhood, his military service and paralysis during the Vietnam War, and his transition to antiwar activism. At the 62nd Academy Awards, it received eight nominations, including Best Picture and Best Actor for Cruise, his first nomination, and the film won for Best Director and Best Film Editing.

As we know, they’re expensive, and many families have to choose between food and hygiene items. Our Jewish community agencies are joining forces to do a Hygiene Items Drive on Saturday, July 24, 8 am – 12 noon, and Monday and Tuesday, July 26 & 27, 10 am – 4 pm in front of Temple Israel. Just drive by and drop off your donation – any items you choose from the list below:

Shampoo w/conditioner, bar soap, liquid soap, sanitary pads/tampons, toothpaste, toothbrushes, deodorant, hand sanitizer, wet wipes, combs/brushes, suntan lotion (tubes/spray), shaving cream, razors, chapstick, skin lotion, 3-in-1 body wash

This time, we are after full-size items that will last for a while. You can purchase them for $1 or less at Dollar Trees or 99 Cent stores or your favorite source.

Interested in Joining an NCJW Book Club?
NCJW has two long-standing, ongoing book clubs, and one has a few openings for new members. The Books, Bagels, and Banter Book Club has been meeting once a month for more than 20 years and really enjoys a wide variety of fiction as well as nonfiction books -- some with Jewish themes, some not, all chosen to be great books for discussion. We have a maximum of 10 members so that, outside of Covid restrictions when we met on Zoom, we can meet in members' homes on Sunday mornings and share brunch and a great discussion. We alternate responsibility for facilitating the discussion. If you're interested to learn more, please email info@ncjwlongbeach.org with your name, contact info, and interests, and a member will get back to you.
Investment Committee Members Wanted
Did you know that we have a professionally managed investment account? We are looking for members with an interest in or want to learn more about our investments.

We meet only 3 to 4 times per year with our professional financial advisor and review our investment portfolio. This portfolio helps fund our amazing work. NO EXPERIENCE REQUIRED!  You will have an opportunity to learn about investments and market trends and ask questions or make suggestions that might help our organization grow. Please contact Joanne Levy for more information at info@ncjwlongbeach.org or call (657) 235-2511.

For Goodness Cakes!
Spread Love, Joy, and Frosting!
Wouldn't it be fun to bake a birthday cake for a foster child?

For Goodness Cakes gives underprivileged youth in the foster care system the chance to have a birthday by matching volunteers to bake special cakes just for them. Its mission is to give individual youth one special moment that is about them, helping to nurture optimism and confidence at a critical age. A wonderful and meaningful opportunity for our Section to get involved.

How it works: For Goodness Cakes receives requests from nonprofits that work with at-risk youth for cake orders. After you complete an online orientation and quiz, you become part of the Sprinkle Squad, which lets you to pick a cake-making assignment according to YOUR schedule. To learn more, visit www.forgoodnesscakes.org/volunteer. Once you have joined the Sprinkle Squad, please contact Bobbi Horowitz at (657) 235-2511 or email info@ncjwlongbeach.org.
