What's New at the Memory and Brain Wellness Center?

2024 Lancet Commission on Dementia Report Released: New Recommendations to Reduce Dementia Risk Worldwide; Untreated High Cholesterol and Vision Loss Linked to Raised Risk.


Today, the Lancet Commission on Dementia Prevention, Intervention, and Care published a report that highlights recommendations for policy makers and individuals to help reduce dementia risk worldwide. The Commission is authored by 27 dementia experts from different countries. The author list includes the UW’s Eric B. Larson, MD, MPH, who has now worked on all three Lancet reports on dementia risk. Larson gives us context for the newly added modifiable risk factors and recommendations and shares how UW research has influenced this report.

Memory Hub expanded open hours by over 50%

As part of our mission to promote the well-being of persons living with memory loss and their families, the Memory & Brain Wellness Center offers a variety of programs focused on support, education, or engagement at the Memory Hub, alongside programs offered by our onsite-collaborators.

We are excited to announce that that starting in July, we are expanding Memory Hub open hours by over 50%! Drop in anytime between 9am - 4pm, Monday - Thursday.

Caregiver Essay:

My Experience Caring for my Wife Gail and What I Learned about Communication and Alzheimer's


Community member Alan Jaffe contributed an essay on his approaches to communication changes during his time as a dementia caregiver. "I was the caregiver for my late wife Gail over the last five years of her life. I hope to share my experience with other caregivers and relate how changing my way of communicating helped us."

Come with your loved one to enjoy an afternoon at the Memory Hub! Caregivers will have a book discussion group led by Seattle Public Library. People with memory loss will have a music engagement program led by a certified music therapist. The last half hour we’ll come together for social time and snacks! A free event.

Enjoy nature-inspired art workshops this summer! Take a brief tour of Maude’s Garden, then explore various art forms led by facilitators associated with the Memory Hub. Workshops are designed for people with memory loss and family members. Free programs, space is limited. Learn more and sign up.

Friday, August 23, 10am- 4:30pm: 2nd Annual Garden of Inspiration Art Show at the Memory Hub


You are invited to our 2nd annual Garden of Inspiration Art Show - a one-day outdoors art exhibit in a healing garden, taking place August 23. The show celebrates the creativity of the Memory Hub community. A collaboration between the UW Medicine's UW Memory and Brain Wellness Center and Elderwise, with support from Era Living Memory Care. The UW Memory and Brain Wellness Center Community Programs and Events are happening both in-person and online. Join us in August for a variety of support, education and engagement opportunities – or drop in to our Memory Hub community center during its NEWLY EXPANDED open hours, 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. Monday – Thursday. Free valet parking is provided by Murano Senior Living with validation at our front desk.

Shared Outdoor Adventures for Resilience Program (S.O.A.R)


With the S.O.A.R. (Shared Outdoor Adventures for Resilience) Program, reinforce your strengths and connect with others through monthly small group hikes and other outdoor adventures in the Seattle area, from July 2024 - June 2025. S.O.A.R is for people diagnosed with Alzheimer's or another dementia before age 65, with a family member or friend. Virtual Coffee Chats


Make a cup of coffee or tea, and come together online for an informal social time with others living with memory loss or dementia. Facilitated by trained volunteers with support from Program Manager Marigrace Becker. The SHARP brain health program for African Americans age 55+ kicks off again this summer at Seattle’s Central Area Senior Center. Join an orientation from 1-2 p.m. on Wednesday August 7 to learn more about this walking and reminiscence program based in Seattle’s Central District. Learn more.

The Memory Café in Oak Harbor now meets twice a month, 12:30 p.m. on the 1st and 3rd Tuesdays. Come together with people living with memory loss and their families for food, fun, conversation and music. Hosted at the 1st United Methodist Church. Learn more.


Dementia & Inclusive Rec Hour at Renton Senior Center continues 12:30-1:30 p.m. every Thursday. Activities range from music, light chair exercise, crafts, and nature walks. A free program for people with memory loss; care partners encouraged to join. Learn more.

NEW "Meet me at the Wildlife Refuge" program with HOPE Dementia Support in Clark County takes place every 4th Tuesday of the month from 1-3 pm. Kin On offers its annual Senior’s Day from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. on Saturday September 14 in Redmond. Join in a special celebration honoring and appreciating elders with a fun day including cultural performances, health and wellness workshops, delicious food, community resources and connections. Bainbridge Island Museum of Art in partnership with the Frye Art Museum offers Meet Me at the Movies from 11 a.m. – 12 p.m. on Saturday August 24. This interactive film program designed for people with memory loss and care partners incorporates theme-based film clips and audience discussion. Learn more.
