Work on Your Abstract Submissions!

Dear members, colleagues and friends,

I hope that you are enjoying a nice summer. While I know that winter is a long ways away, it will be here faster than you think and with it, our world-famous VOS conference. With this newsletter, the VOS board wants to remind you to start your planning for next year’s conference which we want to be collaborative, innovative and entertaining. This year we will spotlight those going the extra mile to work together toward better patient outcomes, those who put their mentees forward, and those friends and family members who come along, supporting our drive to create a unified community around veterinary orthopedics.

I will take this opportunity to wish the best of luck to the interns and residents who started their new positions a few weeks ago. Being in training is a unique moment in one’s professional journey, and I hope you will find it rewarding and fulfilling, though I have no doubt that there will be some more challenging times. VOS is a resource you can use to learn, grow, and also take a break from your training routine. So request your time off now, work with your mentors to submit an abstract, and join us this winter to be part of what will be an outstanding conference. In addition to the traditional abstract presentations, we will feature a few educational events centered on how to learn and how to teach in this modern digital world. There will also be some sponsored laboratories for hands-on practical training, so stay tuned for announcements as spots will be limited.

Enjoy the rest of your summer, but mostly make sure you work on your abstract submissions! If you need help, let me know and I will find a way to assist you with submitting it!

SUBMIT VOS RESEARCH GRANT APPLICATIONS

Grant applications are due Sept. 1 for the Wade O. Brinker Award and Oct. 14 for the Hohn-Johnson Award.

by Sarah Malek

Research Chair

Description: The VOS Hohn-Johnson and Wade O. Brinker research awards are grants funding research in musculoskeletal conditions in animals. As of February 2024, the VOS is pleased to offer two Wade O. Brinker research awards.

Funding: The Hohn-Johnson award is limited to $40,000.00. The two Wade O. Brinker awards are limited to $6,000.00 per resident. Any additional funds needed to complete the research will have to be secured before the VOS research chairperson will accept the proposal for evaluation. Double funding of projects will not be supported by the VOS and will result in forfeiture of the VOS funds.

Hohn-Johnson and Wade O. Brinker award principal investigators must be active members of the VOS as of the 1st of September in the year of application.

Review Process: The VOS research committee reviews the proposals, which are evaluated using the following criteria:

  • Relevance to VOS goals and priorities
  • Scientific and technical quality of the idea
  • Scientific and technological quality of the methods
  • Feasibility of accomplishing objectives within the proposed time line
  • Relevance of objectives to current literature

Award and Reporting: Any requests for extension must be provided in writing to the VOS office. Annual progress reports, due at the end of May of each year, are required until the project is finished. Each awardee is strongly encouraged to present the project, data, and conclusions to the VOS membership in the form of a scientific abstract at an annual VOS meeting. To that end, additional travel funds ($500) are available to the awardee if the final research report is presented first at the VOS annual meeting.

Application submission is now open.

APPLICATION DEADLINES:

Hohn-Johnson Award: October 14, 2024

Wade O. Brinker Award: September 1, 2024 (updated from last year)

Submission Guidelines can be found on the Hohn-Johnson/Wade O. Brinker Research Awards page of the VOS website or by contacting the VOS office at secretary@vosdvm.org.

With the VOS conference a mere half a year away, I thought it reasonable to start thinking about Silent Auction donations. If you would like to donate an item (it does not have to be veterinary related – think gift cards, clothing, vacation packages, sporting equipment) to the 2025 Silent Auction, please email me Katja.Lin.DVM@gmail.com. Remember all proceeds help to fund the VOSEF.

Thank you and have a happy summer!
