Mayor's Message

July kicks off a busy season of events!

July brings so much to celebrate in Cedar City when the town really comes to life with all the festivals, events, and activities.

You can find something fun to do nearly every weekend and may even be caught up in wondering how you will fit it all in. Many of my favorite events happen in the summer and I hope to see you around enjoying the great weather and entertainment.

The Utah Shakespeare Festival’s season has officially kicked off with multiple shows a day throughout the week, continuing through early October. We welcome all the actors and visitors who spend time in our community this summer.

Simon Fest will kick off their season on July 5 at the Heritage Center Theater with three shows: Fiddler on the Roof, Steel Magnolias, and Ordinary Days.

This year, Cedar City is pleased to host the Pioneer Legacy Celebration at the SUU Coliseum on July 24, presented by the Osmond Family!

Originally from St. George, this is a free production that will pay tribute to our beloved pioneers and will feature a theatrical reenactment along with fireworks.

And speaking of history, I want to remember our 2nd Mayor and founder of Cedar City, Mr. Henry Lunt, who will celebrate his 200th birthday in July. Give his bronze statue a wave as you celebrate Independence Day at the Lions Club parade, or when you’re on your way to your next fun summer activity.

-Mayor Garth O. Green

CELEBRATE SAFELY AND RESPONSIBLY THIS SUMMER

We have had a windy, dry summer so far which is an ideal environment for wildfires. Our public safety officials encourage everyone to be safe when celebrating with fireworks by following the recommended locations and abiding by the designated dates/times to discharge fireworks.

July 2 to 5 from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m.

July 22 to July 25 from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. (Extended to midnight on the holiday)

Fireworks are always prohibited in the wildland urban interface and unincorporated areas. To view the map displaying where fireworks are prohibited, CLICK HERE.

Recommended locations to use legal fireworks within Cedar City limits include the South parking lot of Cedar High School; the parking lot at the Bicentennial Softball Complex; the Iron Springs Elementary parking lot; the Canyon View High School north parking lot; the Aquatic Center parking lot; and the street between the Bicentennial Soccer Complex parking lots (the streets will be closed to traffic for the discharge dates.)

We also encourage safety awareness at many of the fun summer events happening soon, including the Lions Club Independence Day Parade. Please do not allow children to run into the street and stay behind the white “fog” line. Remember to also lock your car doors during summer activities. Let’s be safe and have fun!

CONSTRUCTION AT WEST CANYON PARK

Much of West Canyon Park has been fenced off to construct new amenities led by the Cedar City Rotary Club. This project includes all-abilities amenities to the Park, such as:

  • Playground
  • Accessible water play
  • Equipment & signage educating about Iron County’s history and heritage of water use

We understand that the construction may cause some inconvenience, especially during the summer months when the park is in high demand. We appreciate your understanding and patience over the next few months while the construction is underway.

ANNUAL STREET MAINTENANCE: JULY - AUGUST 2024

Our Street division has started their annual maintenance in area two of the city. Our city roads are evaluated every seven years on a schedule and this year’s area is located on the west side of the airport and on Cross Hollow Road.

All affected neighborhoods will receive a written letter prior to roadwork. This process is called chip sealing and we thank you for your patience during any road closures.
