In this issue: July & August meetings, some great resources

July 23, 2024, 7 PM Meeting:

PFLAG Parents and a Trans Teen Tell Their Stories in the Media

It's movie night in July as we view and discuss a handful of short videos, hearing from a trans teen who testified before a Senate Committee as well as some journeys of acceptance and support by a variety of PFLAG parents across the country. Stories and images shared by and about LGBTQ+ individuals and their families help expand our understanding of the strength and struggles around being different in a heteronormative, cisgender world.

After the program presentation, we will hold space for confidential sharing and support. We welcome you at our events with no judgment and lots of love.

Meetings are held from 7-9 PM in the Campbell Room at St. John's Presbyterian Church, 2727 College Avenue in Berkeley (look for the PFLAG banner). Masks are optional. We ask that you not attend if you are feeling unwell or if you've been in contact with anyone who is unwell. Between meetings, our board is still here to connect with you one-on-one. Email pflagoeb@gmail.com or leave us a voicemail at 510-562-7692 and we will call you back.

Nonbinary Awareness Week

The week surrounding July 14 (International Nonbinary People’s Day) is Nonbinary Awareness Week. Whether you're looking for resources for yourself or to be a better ally, PFLAG has you covered.

To our nonbinary loved ones: we see you, we support you, and we're #PFLAGProud of you!

Next month - Join Us at Our Summer Social

August Ice Cream Social, August 4, 1-3 PM

On Sunday, August 4, we will be holding an outdoor, in-person ice cream social for PFLAG families from 1-3 PM at a private home in Berkeley. Ice cream as well as a nondairy option will be available. Feel free to bring a snack to share. You can RSVP at pflagoeb@gmail.com to learn the address and share how many people will be in your party.

Note, we are cancelling our 4th Tuesday meeting in August - please join us at the social instead while we enjoy the summer weather outside together!

Hooray, the SAFETY Act Moves to the Next Stage!

On June 27, 2024, the California State Assembly passed the SAFETY Act, which would ban school districts from adopting forced outing policies. The California Senate previously approved it; now it heads to Governor Newsom’s desk for his signature. PFLAG National and 19 California PFLAG chapters (including PFLAG Oakland-East Bay) endorsed the bill.

I Changed My Mind

I Changed My Mind is a new series created by Brooke Sebold that aims to normalize what the changing mind looks like through conversations with individuals who have changed their mind about significant topics that lead to a personal paradigm shift in their lives.

Check out the first episode about a mother who learned how to lead with love and support and affirm her trans son.
