Northwest Biosolids Thanks Karla Guevarra!
This past month, Karla Guevarra gave notice that she was leaving her role as Wastewater Plant Operations Manager for Pierce County, Washington. Her departure also means that Karla will be leaving the Board of Directors of Northwest Biosolids. During her past 4 years with NWB, Karla has been an active member and Director; mostly recently serving as Vice-Chair of the Membership Committee and active participant on the Education Committee. Karla brought a great perspective to the Board from her previous exposure in biosolids treatment and management practices. Before moving to the Pacific Northwest, Karla had worked for the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission (SFPUC) and supported the expansion of beneficial use programs for biosolids at the two main wastewater treatment facilities. She is a graduate of Stanford University, also located in Palo Alto, south of San Francisco. We give Karla our best wishes for a bright future and hopefully an opportunity to share her experiences with us in her next journey! GOOD LUCK KARLA!!

Master Class with Dr. Sally Brown Feat. Dan Thompson
And who are those lovely ladies? Veterans of NW Biosolids may remember that this was the picture Dan Thompson would use when talking about the higher ups in the city council. Dan, recently retired, was the lead at Tagro for many years. That is the program that regularly sells out of biosolids. Before that, he managed the biosolids program in Everett and before that he worked at King County (then Metro). Dan and I talk in this month's master class about how to make your program visible and appreciated. Dan has been a pillar in NW Biosolids, having been president, lead of the regulations committee and a source of humor and practical wisdom. It was a pleasure to interview him for this month's master class.

Historical Perspective
By Dr. Sally Brown, University of Washington
Time for the biosolids time machine. Back to the days when ‘night soil’ was the name. Long before the days of centralized wastewater treatment, human waste was an integral part of cropping systems. That all changed when the connection was made between pathogens in the poop and disease. Centralized wastewater with public health as a focus put resource recovery on the back burner. Nowadays with regenerative agriculture increasingly understood as a key tool for sustainability, organic amendments are valuable again. Will that also hold for biosolids? To see the future, you must first study the past. So here we go.
