Former WWE Star to Speak at WNC CREST Event on Aug. 8

Zach Gowen will visit Western Nevada College on Tuesday, Aug. 8, for a motivational and interactive presentation to the College Education for Students in Transition (CREST) program. The “Don’t Quit Your Daydream” presentation in Carson Nugget Hall is provided by WNC Disability Support Services and the Diversion, Equity and Inclusion Committee.

Students' Works of Art on Display
at the Brick through Aug. 17
|
Enjoy 57 works of art by 25 Western Nevada College students in the “Fresh Outlook 2023” exhibit now showing at the Brick. Capital City Arts Initiative is presenting the exhibit through Aug. 17 in the Community Development Building (better known as the Brick). The exhibit is free to the public with viewing from 8 a.m. to noon and 1 to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Golf for Education in Support of Workforce Development on Sept. 29
|
One of the area's top golf events of the fall is nearing: WNC Foundation's Golf for Education. The 18-hole team scramble is set for Friday, Sept. 29, at Toiyabe Golf Club. The 24th annual tournament supports workforce development in the region and gives members of the community the opportunity to help students with financial need earn the certifications essential to acquiring meaningful employment and support Nevada's growing economy.

Student Services to Remain Open until
7 p.m. on Wednesdays in August
|
Student Services will remain open after regular business hours every Wednesday night in August to help students prepare for the Fall 2023 semester. On the Carson City campus, representatives from Admissions and Records, Academic Advising and Access and the Financial Aid Office will be available until 7 p.m. on Wednesdays, Aug. 2, Aug. 9, Aug. 16, Aug. 23 and Aug. 30 to assist students.

Western Nevada College and Oasis Academy alumna Ellona Gehman is seeing the country as a traveling pediatric oncology nurse. She says that supporting little fighters in their biggest battles has become a passion and she enjoys every minute of being their nurse.

ROADS Program Enables Jiffy Air Tool to Upskill Employees in MTT Training
|
Jiffy Air Tool CNC machinists and operators recently completed industry training through Western Nevada College's Machine Tool Technology program that can change their careers while providing their company with more skilled employees. The accelerated training, created and funded by WNC's ROADS program, spanned two months and included both online and in-person, hands-on schooling customized to fit Jiffy Air Tool's shop floor requirements.

Senator Rosen Visits Fallon Campus, Notes Nursing Program Expansion

Senator Jacky Rosen visited Western Nevada College's Fallon campus on July 6 to discuss Nevada’s medical provider shortage, emphasizing the need for nurses in rural areas. News 2 of Reno was there to cover her visit and to report the changes forthcoming to the nursing program.

Mathematics Professor Tim Mayo Selected as Community Hero
|
Greater Nevada Credit Union is recognizing two Western Nevada College employees as Community Heroes this summer. The first of the two honorees is Mathematics Professor Tim Mayo. He will be honored by GNCU at the Reno Aces’ game against the Salt Lake Bees at 6:30 p.m. Friday, Aug. 11, at Greater Nevada Field.

WNC Supports Carson High Students
in International Education Program

The Western Nevada College Office of Academic and Student Affairs and the WNC Foundation sponsored Carson High Students who were invited to attend Cubes in Space in Virginia in June. Cubes in Space is an international education program and competition that empowers students ages 11 to 18 to design and build experiments launched into space. Two of CHS's experiments were launched into space! WNC's sponsorship helped to fund the students' travel expenses.

Twenty-seven WNC employees are celebrating employment anniversaries with the Nevada System of Higher Education in July. Among the anniversary celebrants are four employees who have served NSHE institutions for 15-plus years: Enrollment and Retention Specialist Elizabeth Best (22), Disability and Support Services Director Susan Trist (18), History Professor Kim DesRoches (17) and ACCEL Director and HSE Chief Examiner Angela Holt (17).

Fallon Youths Explore Variety of Careers

The Fallon Police Department presented a crime scene for youths to solve. It was all part of Career Days on WNC's Fallon campus earlier this month. WNC community partners Churchill County Sheriff's Office, Churchill County Museum, Churchill County Library, Epworth United Methodist Church and The Fallon Post also participated in the two-day event.

High Marks for Ultra Run Event Venue
at WNC's John L. Harvey Field

Participants in the 2023 Tahoe Rim Trail Endurance Runs were "blown away" by the new start-finish venue for their event. The “Ultra Lounge” at John L. Harvey Field provided runners with cover from extreme heat following their grueling 100-mile, 50-mile and 55 kilometer ultraruns on July 15 and 16.

Tigers Convert Former WNC Slugger to a Pitcher; Yanks Farmhand Bell Retires
|
The mysteries have been solved concerning the futures of Western Nevada College’s remaining two players in professional baseball entering the 2023 season.
Former New York Yankees farmhand Chad Bell has retired after spending three seasons in the Pinstripes’ minor league system. Meanwhile, DJ Peters, the 2016 Scenic West Player, has remained in the Detroit Tigers’ organization as a pitcher.
