Consumer Debt Climbs to $14.6 Trillion, Driven by Mortgages and Auto Loans
Even with several businesses either closed, or not back to full production, total consumer debt increased by $85 billion during the first quarter of 2021. The reason for the surge in consumer debt: mortgages and auto loans - which is considered healthy debt. Consumers also managed to shed credit card debt (unhealthy debt) during this time as balances fell to $770 billion, $157 billion lower than where they sat at the end of 2019. As mortgage rates are expected to stay low for the remainder of the year, it’s likely healthy debt will continue to rise as credit card debt continues to decline.

As Auto Lending Shifts Online, Credit Unions Feel Squeezed
Credit unions are losing auto loans as buyers shift to online purchasing as well as dealer financing, which has become very fast and easy. As the model for auto lending changes, credit unions will have to adjust to be a part of this new paradigm.

We are excited to introduce to you our Summer Marketing Intern, Noah Cormany!

Noah is currently pursuing his bachelor's degree in Public Relations at the University of Tennessee! He also has experience working with a local non-profit organization assisting with their media output. Noah enjoys going to the gym, playing soccer, and serving with his campus ministry during the school year. All through high school, he performed on stage at local theaters, and while he doesn’t currently have time for it anymore, it is something he is very passionate about and is what inspires him to be creative. When asked about what he likes about working at ISI so far, he said, “It has been a very welcoming environment full of kind people, which has been a wonderful blessing.”
