Planning for the School Year

Whether you're still in the classroom over the summer or not, planning is always important, and back to school time is a good time to plan. Back-to-school dates vary from state to state, but most schools and pre-kindergarten programs start somewhere in the next 5-7 weeks. The best way to ensure you have a great school year is to start planning now! Most veteran teachers and experienced childcare providers have a good idea of what they need to do to get ready for the school year, but it's always good to know how you can help the children feel most comfortable in their new environ
Classroom arrangement is one of the most important aspects of a positive and productive environment. The right arrangement can maximize learning, minimize behavior problems, and accommodate a potentially increasing class size. Experienced educators agree that the best arrangements will allow you to walk freely through the classroom so you can easily answer individual questions, stop to help students on a more personal level, and offer adequate supervision as you walk around. Your classroom is your home away from, and It's important that it reflects your personality as a teacher, and the beliefs and philosophies you want to instill in your students. You will need to assess what you've got to work with, create or modify activity areas, and add and arrange furnishings that will facilitate the activities. As you assess your classroom space, remember that it is a work place and it should provide adequate light and air, noise control, and storage areas for you and your students.

Back to School Checklist

A successful classroom invites students to question and explore. It helps to set up an elementary class in sections: One for read-aloud time, one for the classroom library, one for science activities and hands-on learning, one for the students' belongings, etc. For secondary students, it helps having specific areas where they know they can find assignments, see what's planned for the day, and get books for specific subjects.

Back to School Safety
Back to school time can be stressful and overwhelming for everyone, but it's important to be reminded of all safety procedures for children. Remember to safely share the roads with school buses, pedestrians and bicyclists, and provide children with the knowledge to stay safe at school. Injuries are common at school-but many can be prevented. Before you send your children off, be sure to run through these safety topics.

SCH104: Successful Transitions with School-Aged Children
as an online no-cost trial
child care training course
to new CCEI users during the month of July.
This course presents recommended strategies and practices for easing different types of transitions in the school-age care environment. This includes transitions from one setting or activity to another as well as life's many other transitions, some of which arise unexpectedly. The cognitive and social-emotional skills required for successful classroom transitions are surprisingly similar to those required for making healthy, positive transitions through life's many changes and surprises.

Congratulations to Leslie for successfully completing the Online Self-Study Child Development Associate (CDA) Certificate Program of Study!
Leslie began her career in child care by taking a special elective class in high school which piqued her interest. She loves spending all day with the children in her care! The children in Leslie's care like reading time, and they love snack and lunch time! Leslie is motivated by seeing the children in her care grow, and watching as they conquer new milestones.
In her spare time, Leslie enjoys spending time with her own kids, as well as reading and getting together with friends. In the future, she plans to become the Assistant Director at her childcare center. Leslie is currently working toward obtaining her CDA Credential from the Council of Professional Recognition. She recommends CCEI to everyone and says, "CCEI gave me the freedom I needed to work at my own pace, but still didn't let me forget my deadline. My education coach was amazing!"
