Club Registration Reminder, August 1-23, clubs must register to participate in the re-signing and Fall Tryouts.

As athletes are preparing for the Fall and Winter Tryout Periods, we have created a resource to help guide the decision to select which club(s) you would like to tryout for and things to consider prior to signing a Volleyball Alberta Letter of Intent (VA LOI).

2024 Fall Tryouts - Updated Dates

Our 2024-2025 Signing and Tryout Process will officially occur during the traditional school season for the first time. This change was made to adapt to increasing challenges that clubs have organizing and coordinating their operations in addition to limiting some of the competing requirements athletes were under during the school season. We are fortunate to be facing incredible growth within our sport, this provides both challenges and opportunities. Clubs are facing significant increases in demand, that far outstrips their access to facilities, coaches, and volunteers. This demand has forced us to change how we do things – to provide as many opportunities to athletes as possible, and the required lead time for clubs to organize their programs.

With the first tryouts occurring on Sundays, we anticipate many offers will be made and accepted after the first day. A large number of athletes will have also chosen to re-sign with their club from last season, this means that most teams utilizing the Fall Tryout Period will have their rosters completed without conflicting with a school practice or competition. By providing an early re-signing and tryout option for 2024-2025, we hoped to limit the disruption to the school season by completing club tryouts and re-signing quickly, so athletes can stay focused on their current school team.

However, the switch to tryouts in September has triggered a conflict with the Alberta Schools' Athletic Association (ASAA) policy of “ASAA eligible student is not permitted to play on a non-school team in the same sport during the same season of play”. We misbelieved this policy was only applicable to competitions versus tryouts or training. Placing athlete’s participation with their school teams in jeopardy is not an outcome that either the ASAA or Volleyball Alberta want, we have met to find common ground for an athlete centered solution.

To further reduce the potential impact of club volleyball tryouts on the school season, we have shifted our 15U-18U tryouts one week earlier which will now be:

·       18U Tryouts will be held on Sunday, September 8 and end on September 15

·       17U Tryouts will be held on Sunday, September 15 and end on September 22

·       16U Tryouts will be held on Sunday, September 22 and end on September 29

·       15U Tryouts will be held on Sunday, September 29 and end on October 6

We know not all regions or clubs will utilize Fall tryouts however we sincerely apologize for having to make an adjustment after the policy was published. Please see the Joint Memo from the ASAA and Volleyball Alberta for additional clarification.

Insurance

As of May 3, 2024, please be advised that Volleyball Alberta has recently changed its Insurance Broker to NFP Canada Corp. The limits of liability and coverage remain the same with K&K. New certificates are available for the 2024-2025 term, expiring 2025/06/01.

We ask that clubs submit 1 form with their full list of potential gym rentals needing to be named on the COI in the initial request to lessen the number of emails we need to relay to the insurance office and to speed up the process and turnaround time. The COI request form link can be found on our website > About > Insurance > expand the COI section banner. When listing the facility, city/town, and school board (specific schools do not need to be named; naming the School Board includes all of its schools), please make sure the certificate holder’s Name, Address and Postal Code are included for each. Additional COIs may be requested throughout the season.
