In this four-week course we will cover the basics and also address points that you always felt you struggled with.

We will see that grammar can actually be fun and extremely helpful for improving reading comprehension. Therefore, we will examine the grammar in actual texts.

We work in small classes and enrolment is limited.

This course will be conducted entirely in French. All four language skills listening, speaking, reading and writing will be practiced and homework will be assigned. Videos to French in Action are easily accessible online. These videos also touch on grammar and vocabulary. If you watch video 46 and are comfortable with the language, this course is for you.

The group is for high-intermediate to advanced (or fluent) speakers who are current members of an Alliance Française chapter in the U.S. (if you are not a current member of an Alliance chapter, visit the Chapter’s page and sign up for membership at one of your closest AF chapters) or AATF members. Native speakers are welcome. This group conversation is for adult participants, ages 17 and up.

Every Wednesday @ 5:00 PT / 7:00 pm CT / 8:00 pm ET

The group is hosted by a member of the Federation of Alliances Françaises board – Linda Witt. Attendees will be assigned to breakout rooms of 4-5 people, with each breakout session lasting 14 minutes. The rooms are then are re-created (for a different mix each time). In this way, participants get to meet and chat with a variety of participants from different backgrounds, regions, and fluency levels.

Participants will need to use Zoom (a free videoconferencing service). To get on the invitation list for the “Apéro-National” sessions, click here.

A Conversation with William C. Carter In Celebration of Marcel’s Proust’s Birthday (in English)

July 16 @ 4:00 pm - 5:00 pm EDT

Federation of Alliances Françaises USA in collaboration with the Proust Society of Greenwich

In honor of Marcel Proust’s birthday, join us for a conversation between Fereshteh Priou, founder of the Proust Society of Greenwich, and William C. Carter, Professor Emeritus of French at the University of Alabama at Birmingham and Proust biographer.

William C. Carter is a distinguished Professor Emeritus of French at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. His biography Marcel Proust: A Life was selected as a “Notable Book of 2000” by The New York Times. Harold Bloom has written that Carter is “Proust’s definitive biographer” and that his more recent book, Proust in Love, is “a marvelous study of the comic splendor of the great novelist’s vision of human Eros and its discontents.” He co-produced the award-winning documentary film Marcel Proust: A Writer’s Life.

In 2013, Yale University Press published a new edition of the biography and began publishing a revised, annotated edition of Scott Moncrieff’s distinguished translation of In Search of Lost Time. Swann’s Way appeared in 2013 and In the Shadow of Young Girls in Flower was published in October 2015. The Gale Group published in 2013 his edition of The Dictionary of Literary Biography volume (371) on Proust. That same year Carter received the Médaille d’Or du Mérite Francophone from the American Delegation of La Renaissance Française.

Fereshteh Priou is the founder of the Proust Society of Greenwich and leading a monthly gathering of Proust enthusiasts since 2007. The group members engage in close reading of Marcel Proust’s book, À la recherche du temps perdu. Fereshteh started the fourth round of reading the book in January 2023.

This event will be on Zoom and is free for all Alliance Française members in the U.S., AATF members, and invited guests of the presenters. Non-members or persons who have no AF chapter nearby can purchase tickets ($10). Please click here to register.

A Northern Light in Provence: Ilse Erlund is a translator who lives in a house on stilts along the west coast of Greenland. Isolated and restless in her world by the sea, she convinces her publisher to pay for a trip to the country she has never visited but whose language she speaks fluently: France. Her mission is to translate the verses of Geoffrey “Po” Labaye, a charismatic poet known as “the last living troubadour of Provence.”
