Pele, the Hawaiian Goddess of Fire

On May 18th, the farm of Paul and Suzanne was completely overrun by a 30 foot wall of fiery, molten lava from Mount Kilauea. The Hawaiians call the lava, Pele, the fire goddess.

Have you ever wondered why Hinduism has so many gods and goddesses, and yet they say that "God is one"? According to the Vedas, there is only one omnipresent being consisting of pure consciousness. We are all expressions of that being.  It manifests itself in innumerable ways throughout our physical universe, in the form of the various aspects of nature. So, in order to explain those forces of nature, the ancient Vedic seers anthropomorphized them as gods and goddesses, in order to help people understand the never-ending changes taking place in the world around them.

One of the most fundamental aspects of nature is the "Pancha Tattvas"  (five elements).  And of these five elements, possibly the most important is Agni, fire. After all, it is the fiery Sun that is the center of the solar system and the thing that makes life on our planet possible. The light of the Sun is taken as the fire of pure consciousness in the Vedic tradition, so the ancient Vedic rishis, considered Agni, the god of fire, to be preeminent among the forces of nature. In fact, the main ritual that has been performed in the Hindu religion, from ancient times, has always been the Yagya, a ritual of making offerings into a sacred fire.

Vedic astrology is a system that helps us understand the various changes in our natural environment by tracking the motion of the planets, which symbolize the different aspects of nature. For example, Agni, the fire element, is ruled by Mars. At the moment, Mars is transiting through the sign of Capricorn, where it is exalted, meaning that it is very strong, so the energy of the fire element is very high.   I live in the California mountains where I am surrounded by forest. When it gets hot, they issue an alert called a Red Flag Warning, which means there is a high risk of forest fires. You can think of Mars in Capricorn like a Red Flag Warning, only it's for the whole world and it can produce all kinds of fiery events.

I wrote about the Mars/Ketu conjunction that is occurring in Capricorn in the last issue of this newsletter. I said that Mars would enter Capricorn on May 3, 2018, increasing the energy of Agni, the fire element. On that day, there was a 5.0 earthquake on the Big Island of Hawaii, at Mount Kilauea, and lava began to flow. On May 17th, when Mars came to 6 degrees of Capricorn and conjuncted the exact degree of Mercury in the D4 (chart for the land) in the horoscope for Hawaii, there was an explosive eruption.

The eruption of Kilauea is not anything new. It has currently been active since it erupted in January 3, 1983. It is very interesting to note, however, that in January of 1983, Mars was also in Capricorn. Mars was also in Capricorn (along with Rahu and Saturn) in March of 1990 when Kilauea ramped up its eruptive energy and entered its most destructive eruption period in modern history.

Like the ancient Indians, the people of Hawaii also deify the fire element. In Hawaii, however, the fire god is actually a goddess named Pele. According to her story, Pele traveled by canoe from Tahiti to Hawaii. On the way, she tried to set fires on different islands. Her sister, Namaka, chased after her trying to kill her. When she caught up to her, she and Pele fought and Pele was killed. After dropping her body, the spirit of Pele entered into the Halemaumau crater on Mount Kilauea. According to this legend, her body is the lava stream that comes from the volcano.

The eruption of Kiluea has had a powerful impact on the people of the Big Island. Some of them lost there homes. I recently did a reading for a man named Paul, whose farm was recently buried under 30 feet of lava from the volcano. With his permission, I am sharing his chart here, but to protect his privacy, I am not sharing his birth data or his last name.

Paul and his wife, Suzanne, lived on a farm that was located below the mountain in the path of the lava. When the lava began to flow, they moved all of their animals to a safe location and relocated themselves to an apartment that was away from the lava-zone. As the lava was approaching he kept an eye on the farm, hoping that somehow, the lava would avoid his property. Hours before the lava reached their farm, Paul found a dead owl on his property. Taking this as a sign that the lava was coming, he took the wings off the owl and placed it in a grove of trees as an offering. Paul and Suzanne told me the story of how Pele, the fire goddess embodied by the lava, took their farm, completely inundating it under 30 feet of red molten rock, but somehow flowed around the grove of trees, leaving the offering intact. Although they saved their animals, they lost their farm and all of their possessions. It was one of those cataclysmic life-altering events that has completely changed the direction of their lives.

Have you ever thought about how you would  handle an experience like this?  Would it ruin your life and make you depressed from that point onward? Or would you simply shift your direction and enjoy the new possibilities and opportunities that unfold?

Paul's chart, as well as the chart for Hawaii, along with a brief astrological description are given below.  I am only showing the Chaturtamsha chart, the chart that we use to make predictions for one's real estate, house, or land.

Paul is passing through the major period of Saturn and the sub period of Venus.  In his Chaturtamsha chart (the chart for his home) Venus is the ruler of the 4th house (the home) and it is placed in Scorpio.  Mars and the Sun (both fiery planets) are placed in the 4th house and aspecting Venus.  This is a recipe for damage to the house due to fire during the Venus period.

Hawaii is passing through the major period of the Moon and the sub period of Mercury.  In the chaturtamsha chart, Mercury is the ruler of the 4th house, the land.  It is also the natural significator of the earth element.  It is placed in the 8th house, the house of upheavals and changes.  This is the house we use for earthquakes and volcanic eruptions.  This placement makes the Hawaiian islands prone to earthquakes and volcanic activity, during this period.  However, on May 17th, transiting Mars came to the exact degree of the Mercury in the chathurtamsha chart, triggering a powerful eruption.  Mercury's sub period continues until August 5, 2019.  Mars continues to transit the sign of Capricorn until  November 5, 2018.  Ketu leaves Capricorn on March 29, 2019.  Any or all of these dates could mark transition points as the eruptive energy begins to dissipate.

Natural disasters can bring radical changes in a person's life. They can bring up different emotions and  reactions from different people.  For some, they bring fear and depression.  For others they bring a sense of awe and wonder.  Which would be your style?

"Fear is the cheapest room in the house. I would like to see you living in better conditions."   Hafiz

A Warm Astrological Breeze from Venus in Leo

On July 4, Venus will enter Leo where it will remain until August 1st.   Venus is the planet of love, affection, pleasure, relationships, marriage, and everything related to creativity. Leo is fiery, passionate, creative and self expressive. When Venus is in Leo the creative force is stronger in the world. It makes people more loving and affectionate. It promotes attraction and romance.   It also increases interest in the arts. This is a great time to get back to your art, music, or design projects. It's also a good time for any kind of social event.

On the personal level, each of us will experience the beneficent energy of Venus in our own way, depending on the unique disposition of the individual horoscope. The following is a brief description of how Venus might affect you in the period from July 4th to August 1st.

Note: Remember that this is Vedic astrology and it uses a sidereal zodiac. So the birth dates that correspond to the twelve signs are different from what you read in the newspaper. Make sure that you check the date range for your Vedic Sun sign carefully.   For those who are more conversant with their Vedic chart, you can read the interpretations for your Vedic Moon sign, Lagna, and Arudha Lagna, as well. All four descriptions will have some relevance.

Vedic Sun Signs

Apr 14 - May 14 (Aries) This period gives you the tendency to experience your punya karma (good karma) in a stronger dose. You might feel more playful, romantic, or creative. Anything related to children should go well. This is a good time for anything connected with relationships.

May 15 - Jun 14 (Taurus).   During this period,   your fourth house will be strong. That can produce positive events connected with your mother, vehicles, your home or real estate in general. This period could lift your spirits and you might find yourself feeling more upbeat.

Jun 15 - Jul 15 (Gemini)   During this period, you might get more interested in creative projects. Venus is transiting your third house, so anything related to siblings, communications or short errands will be enhanced. This period is also a good one for children and for any type of travel.

Jul 16 - Aug 16 (Cancer) Venus' transit of Leo might be good for your finances. It is in a place that can create financial gains. There is a catch to this, however. This transit might also give you a desire to spend money on nice things, or to spend money on your home. You might also feel a stronger desire to go out to dinner or to simply eat nicer meals at home.

Aug 17 - Sep 16 (Leo)   Venus will be transiting your Sun sign, making you more charming and gregarious. This influence can be good for heath. It can also be good for any activity that is related to personal beauty or style, like purchasing clothing or getting your hair done. This is also a good period for communication and socializing.

Sep 17 - Oct 16 (Virgo) During this transit, you might be drawn towards the inner direction. But when Venus draws you inward, it always has a sensual element. For example, you might be drawn towards doing more meditation, but you might also want to burn incense or use essential oils while you are doing it. Instead of an austere retreat, you might be attracted to a spa or to a retreat that allows socializing. This period is excellent for long distance travel as well.

Oct 17 - Nov 15 (Libra) During this period, you will probably be drawn to groups or be inclined to connect with your friends. Venus is transiting the eleventh house from your Sun, so it will help you to finish projects, especially those that are related to beauty or creativity. This is also a period that promotes your health.

Nov 16 - Dec 15 (Scorpio) Venus is transiting in the tenth house from your Natal Sun. This is a good period for your work. You will enjoy your work more and you will also like interacting with your boss or your coworkers more than usual. During this transit, you might also collaborate with a partner on projects or work with clients. In either case, you will enjoy what you are doing, getting into a stream of creative energy as you work.

Dec 16 - Jan 13 (Sagittarius) Venus is transiting in the ninth house from your natal Sun. During this period, you might feel like travelling. If so, you will have a pleasant experience while traveling. This period is also good for finances and could bring some improvements in that domain. This period also favors all things related to friends and groups.

Jan 14 - Feb 12 (Capricorn)   During this period, you might experience some financial gain from any type of partnership, marriage, or from clients. This is a good time for making changes that beautify your home or improve your residence. You might find yourself being quite inward with regards to your relationship or marriage, seeking to go deeper and to change something there. This is also a good time to redefine your projects at work, or even to contemplate bigger changes with your career

Feb 13 - Mar 13 (Aquarius) Venus is transiting in the seventh house from your natal Sun. During this period, you will experience relationships with others to be quite loving and warm. This produces a window of sunny astrological weather that promotes romantic possibilities. It's also a great time for taking a trip.

Mar 14 - Apr 13 (Pisces) During this period, Venus will be transiting the sixth house from your natal Sun. This is a good transit for supporting your health. It is also a problem solving period. If you rent a house or apartment, or if you own rental property, this would be a good time to do some cosmetic improvements. One of your siblings might take an interest in beautifying or improving his or her home, as well.

Mars Retrograde
June 26 - August 27, 2018

Mars is currently transiting Capricorn from May 3rd to November 5th. On June 26th   however, it began its retrograde phase which will last until August 27th.   When a planet is retrograde it expresses its energy in a more excessive way. Among other things, Mars signifies assertiveness, aggression, anger, ambition, siblings, will, leadership, the blood, muscles, exercise, and the fire element.

In the past couple of issues of this newsletter, I wrote about Mars's Retrograde and the Mars/Ketu conjunction in Capricorn. The complete article is in the news section of my website.  Click here if you would like to read the article.

Mercury Retrograde
July 26 - August 18, 2018

Mercury will begin its retrograde phase on July 26th at 29 degrees of Cancer, in the last degree of Ashlesha Nakshatra.  Ashlesha's desire is "the desire to defeat my enemies".  It is a nakshatra who's shakti is "the power of poison". Mercury retrograde is normally a period that makes the communication process more complicated, but this period may be especially prone to arguments and disagreements.

On the world stage, this can lead to greater acts of violence and aggression.  This is magnified by the fact that Mercury is conjunct Rahu and in opposition to Mars and Ketu, so there will be much more tendency for various types of political conflict, now.

On the individual level, Mercury retrograde in Ashlesha is a perfect time for doing your psychological homework. The best way to avoid arguments and  disharmony is to re-frame your experience by trying to see things from the other person's perspective.  When you realize that everyone is just trying their best to be happy, however misguided their means might be, it makes it easier to have compassion for them.

So here's a theory I call JK's theory of crazy.  Everyone is crazy. Some are crazier than others, but everyone is crazy in some way. Believe me, I know what I am talking about because I am very crazy myself.

If you are walking on the street and you pass by a person who is out of his mind on drugs and also mentally ill, and if he hurls four letter insults at you in the most disgusting language you have ever heard, what do you do?  Do you resent him or get angry at him?  Do you go up to him and confront him and say,  "Look here buster, you can't talk to me like that.  If you continue, I'm gonna give you a fat lip?"  Or do you just quietly cross the street and get out of his way.  After all, he's crazy and out of his mind.  He is just trying to be happy like everyone else, but he doesn't know how to do it.  So why waste your time and energy arguing with him,  fighting with him, or trying to change him?  Just wish him well and get on with having a nice day.

As the well-known spiritual teacher, Anthony Demello, used to say, "You can't teach a pig to sing.  It frustrates you, and it aggravates the pig!".
Jyotish in the Sierras, 2018

We are getting down to the wire.  "He who hesitates is lost!"

In this chart-analysis intensive, we will explore the intricate patterns of the horoscope, reinforcing and applying fundamentals, as well as learning subtler nuances and secrets of chart interpretation. We will focus on two areas: Transits and Chart Compatibility.

In the Transits section of the class, we will explore the many techniques of using transits for making predictions, both classical and practical.  We will use examples from your own collections, as well as examples from mine, to reinforce your practice.  This class will be geared to intermediate or  advanced students who are  already conversant, to some extent, with using transits.

Part two will focus on relationship astrology, going more  in-depth with chart comparison.  We will work with real charts from real relationships as I show you how to decipher the nuances of the couples interaction.  This  class assumes that you have already taken other classes in chart compatibility, such as my Relationships Class, which is available  online.  It  will build on those techniques and add some more.  But the primary emphasis will be on going through dozens of real-life compatibility charts, together in class. The best way to learn astrology is to do astrology, and we will go through lots of charts.  In the process, we will take your ability to understand relationships to a new level of confidence, making your readings more detailed, and full of nuance.
