Look Who's Newly Ordained!

Above from L to R: Fr. Martin Nyberg, Fr. Tim Berryhill and Cardinal Cupich.

Cardinal Blase Cupich ordained four priests for the Archdiocese of Chicago last Saturday, May 18, 2024, at Holy Name Cathedral. The new priests will begin their assignments on July 1, 2024. Read the Archdiocese of Chicago article here. Two of those four new priests have a connection to St. Josaphat Parish! You can watch the entire ordination here.

Fr. Martin Nyberg

We're getting another priest! Martin Nyberg, 28, from Chicago, will have his first assignment with us at St. Josaphat Parish beginning July 1st. Watch for more information about Fr. Martin coming soon as we welcome him to our parish community. Fr. Carlos is thrilled to have a full house at the rectory. Check out the short video clip below.

Fr. Timothy Berryhill

Tim worked at St. Josaphat as our Parish Support Specialist for a year from mid 2017 to mid 2018 while living at the Archdiocese of Chicago House of Discernment on the Campus of Holy Name Cathedral. Tim grew up in Houston, Texas and came to Chicago in 2007 to attend Loyola University Chicago. Upon graduating in 2011 with a Bachelors degree in Marketing, Tim accepted a Commission as a 2nd Lieutenant in the US Army National Guard where he served as a Platoon Leader and UH-60 Blackhawk Helicopter Pilot. Watch his video below.

In 2013 after initiating the steps to attend RCIA and receive the Sacraments of Initiation, Tim began to feel an interior call to a life of service in the Church through a vocation to the Priesthood. The faith became a very personal part of his life and he felt God calling him to both grow in faith and help others grow in faith as well. He is an FAA certified helicopter pilot and a former skydiver and scuba diver. Despite these adventurous hobbies, Tim regards them as secondary to receiving the Eucharist in the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass and the call to evangelize and "set the world on fire" as St. Ignatius of Loyola once said. Fr. Tim will have his first assignment at St. Paul VI Parish in Riverside.

Above: Fr. Berryhill celebrated his first Mass on Sunday, May 19 at St. George Parish in Tinley Park.

WHAT'S HAPPENING?

Spread Some Sunshine Memorial Day Weekend!

Our Aging Ministry is looking for people who want to spread sunshine to seniors this Memorial Day weekend. We have two opportunities to serve our neighbor residents of Little Sisters of the Poor:

On Saturday, May 25th from 1-3 pm, we will be hosting Bingo for the residents. Volunteers are needed to bring and serve treats (sodas, cookies etc), to assist the residents in playing Bingo and mingling and talking with them.

On Monday, May 27th (Memorial Day) from 11 am-1:30 pm, volunteers are needed to assist the Sisters and staff as they host a BBQ party for the residents. Duties include helping the staff bring out the food, bringing residents outside and getting them settled at tables, serving them lunch, mixing and mingling with the residents and helping the staff clean up.

Children are now allowed – and welcome! – at Little Sisters of the Poor. If you can join in either event, please contact Mary Gallo at aging@stjosaphatparish.org.

Vacation Bible School

Tuesday, June 11th – Friday, June 14th

Registration is open! Introducing a brand new theme for rising Kindergarten through 4th Grade students: Scuba! Plus new this year - a special PreK3 program just for our youngest kiddos. Volunteers are needed in any capacity, please email Nathan for details at nathan@stjosaphatparish.org.

Refugee/Migrant Ministry: Backpack Project

Now through Sunday, July 28th

Many of us want to do something that directly helps children but can’t find a way. We have made it easy for you! The Refugee/Migrant Ministry is joining other LPOT (Lincoln Park/Old Town) parishes to provide backpacks with school supplies to migrant children entering Chicago Public School next school year.

The goal is to prepare the 2,300 school age children in Chicago shelters for the coming school year. We are collecting now through July 28th. Please leave your donations in the back of the church.

As always, thank you for your generosity.

Thank you to all our parishioners who have sent beautiful photos of themselves and their families. It has really helped Fr. Carlos to recognize you in church and we have been able to update our systems in the office as well. If you have not done so yet, please send your photos to photos@stjosaphatparish.org.
