The end of January is fast approaching. Many of us probably had hitting the gym as one of our New Year's resolutions. How many times do we hear the words "No Pain. No Gain"? Is there anything that we can do that is truly positive - where we get as much as we give? Our wonderful Hands of Mercy Ministry volunteers will tell you there is - the joy in giving. The joy in knowing that your HOT homemade meal was the first warm meal for a family in weeks, that the time you spent with a refugee family getting them used to living in a different country has helped teach them just a little independence in a foreign land. Commitments may vary but there are opportunities for anyone willing to lend a hand and spare some time. Here are some ways you can bring hope, happiness and healing ...
Can You Help Feed Migrant Women and Children?
St. Clement Parish is partnering with Catholic Charities to reopen the Madonna House for migrant women and children who have been victims of domestic abuse.
Beginning January 31, LPOT parishes are organizing Wednesday dinners for these families! Sign up to make a meal at your home, and drop it off at the St. Joseph Parish Center (1107 N. Orleans) on Wednesday before noon. Find the Meal Train sign up here.
This is a great opportunity to cook with your family, friends, or small group. Serving sizes will likely increase over the coming months, but they’re currently asking that each meal serve around 15 adults and 5 children.
If you need help with recipe ideas, have questions about drop-off, are interested in driving meals from St. Joseph to Madonna House, or would like to learn more ways to be involved with the Madonna House, please contact Allie Klazura
Cross-Cultural Training
Would you like to strengthen your cross-cultural skills? Are you interested in befriending refugees in Chicago?
If so, you are invited to attend a Cross-Cultural Training, led by Exodus World Service. (Many of you have participated in Exodus' New Neighbor program or the collections of Welcome to America! Packs to assist refugees newly arrived in Chicago.)
Wednesday, January 31, from 6:30–9:30 pm at Missio Dei Church, 931 W. Wilson Ave.
The training will prepare you to engage with refugee individuals and families. It will include in-depth learning and activities to broaden your understanding of who refugees are and how they get to the U.S., as well as what help they receive when they arrive.
Register here or contact Jason Mohn at jason.mohn@exodusworldservice.org with questions.
