As we begin this year's Lenten Journey, we once again focus on the three pillars of Prayer, Fasting and Almsgiving, which are meant to strengthen our ability to deny ourselves, take up our cross and follow Christ.
Prayer helps us to commune and listen more closely to our Lord, who is our life and who hears us when we cry out to him.
Fasting helps us to master our desires both of the flesh and of the spirit to walk humbly with God.
Almsgiving helps us let go of the hold that material possessions have upon us, and makes us more reliant on God's providence.
Prayer, Fasting and Almsgiving go hand in hand, each one increasing and helping the other. If you are struggling with doing all three, pick at least one this Lenten season that you will absolutely commit to. If it be Prayer, dedicate everyday to a time and place of prayer—I suggest trying the “Hallow” app. If it is Fasting, then fast from more than just food on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. Fast every Friday throughout Lent. If you really want to double down, fast from something you love most…like social media or screen time.
Finally, Almsgiving. In the past, our parish has been generous in its almsgiving by providing for many different needs outside our parish. This year, our second collection throughout Lent will be closer to home: supporting the people who benefit from the many outreach programs of our “Hands of Mercy” ministries. You can read more about them on our website. We will also be speaking more about each of the individual ministries throughout the weeks of Lent.
May God bless you and keep you during this Lenten season.
