I'm sure you have heard the good news by now! On February 15,
Band Director Jamaal Nicholas and
Choral Director Andrea Green appeared on the Ellen DeGeneres show in Los Angeles and were surprised with a $100,000 check from Walmart for our trip to Carnegie Hall! We are absolutely ecstatic that this trip will become a reality for our students in April.
While Walmart and Ellen pushed us to our goal, we would not have made it this far without the incredible support of the Jones High School Foundation. We'd like to give special thanks to
Ret. Vice Admiral David L. Brewer III, Dr. Carl MaultsBy, Dr. Janice Choice, Ms. Catherine Adams, Ms. Shirley Bryant, Ms. Vicki Brooks &
Mr. David James, who have worked tirelessly since August 2017 to help us raise funds for this trip. We cannot thank them enough for raising $100,000 in donations from community partners, churches and organizations, and the faithful alumni of the GREAT Jones High School.
Under the leadership of
Mrs. Green and
Mr. Nicholas, our talented chorus and wind ensemble students have been fundraising and performing multiple times per week and on the weekends, to raise awareness and funds for Carnegie Hall.
This trip would not be possible without our dedicated parents and community members.

OCPS Security & Safety Update
At this time of heightened concern over school safety, Orange County Public Schools wants to thank you in advance for helping us. Here are 3 ways you can assist.
1st: We are seeing social media posts about perceived security weaknesses at specific schools. That kind of information - true or not - can make schools vulnerable to intruders. If you see or hear something that worries you regarding school safety, please report it to law enforcement or to an adult at the school. Remember that school safety matters are considered confidential, by state law.
2nd: Pranks and jokes interrupt school and raise anxiety. Such acts are taken seriously and have resulted in discipline and arrest. Please help reinforce this with your children.
3rd: We ask that you remind your students to report issues to an adult rather than spreading rumors. Don't spread it, report it!
Parents and students, we know you all know that "if you see something, you should say something." The way you can say something is by calling law enforcement or school administration, or by using the SpeakOut Hotline. There are three ways to share a tip: online at
www.speakouthotline.org, calling 800-423-TIPS or by downloading the P3 Tips app.

Bridging the Color Divide Black History Month Celebration at the Winter Park Community Center. Bridging the Color Divide is an initiative of St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church to bridge the history of color and race-based division in the community. National Academy Foundation (NAF) Academies Celebrate Engineering Week
In celebration of Engineering Week, Jones and Dr. Phillips High Schools' NAF Academy of Engineering (AOE) students were treated to hands-on workshops hosted by Valencia College engineering students and staff. AOE students also participated in a laser technology demonstration, 3D printing workshop, built an EET circuit and competed a bridge building contest using hot glue and spaghetti. Special thanks to NAF advisory board member/Valencia Professor Charles Davis and his students for planning such a meaningful day. Because of their efforts, 32 students learned more about engineering concepts, received a certificate, and enjoyed lunch. NAF-proving that worked-based learning gets students future ready. Class of 2018
Seniors, on February 8 we informed you of the exciting opportunity to receive a FREE ticket to prom on April 14 by completing the CIW course. We are now giving you the option to choose a free prom ticket or a free ticket to Grad Bash. You must complete your CIW course and pass the test on or before April 1. Jones High administration will be in contact with you regarding taking the test for the CIW course.

Danielle King (Class of 2018)
Congratulations to Senior Danielle King on being named a 2018 MLK Humanitarian by Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer's Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Commission. Danielle and her family attended the awards reception at the Walt Disney World Contemporary Resort with Principal Kirby on February 10.
Danielle is a student who is committed to high moral, ethical, and academic integrity. Sincerely believing that her life's purpose is to help others, she is a member of National Honor Society, Secretary for Best Buddies, Senior Class President, and Senior Class Representative for the National Beta Club. She is a member of Me and My Community Program, Delta G.E.M.S., and the Rollins College Upward Bound Medical Magnet program. As a committed believer in "life can get better", Danielle's volunteer work includes Habitat for Humanity and helping out at an adult living facility. Future plans: Foreign Service Officer; Spelman College (Atlanta, GA)

COMPACT Mentoring - Partnership with Harbor House
Jones High School has partnered with Harbor House of Central Florida. Jamal Baskin and Leanna Jackson come to Jones High School every Tuesday to meet with a group of aspiring students. The Leader-to-Leader Interview program is one of the most exciting aspects of G.L.A.S.S. Girls at Harbor House of Central Florida. Senior Kieosha Johnson and freshman Raldine Nicolas participated in an interactive activity interviewing women in various leadership-related careers.
Women who held various positions at Orlando Police Department (OPD) and National Association of Women in Construction (NAWIC) were able to explain their careers and what it is like to work in male-dominated fields. The teens learned more about the career possibilities open to them and real-life lessons such as the steps needed to seek a specific career, gender bias in the workplace, and the importance of teamwork and healthy relationships in the workplace.

Lacrosse
Congratulations to our Lacrosse team who played their inaugural game against Ocoee High School on February 21. Special shout-out to Hiliy Dujon who scored JHS' first-ever lacrosse goal! Lacrosse is a new addition to our sports offerings this year and we are proud of the young ladies who are trying something new. Please come out and support our ladies this season!

Congratulations to the first District Wrestling Champion in Jones High School history: Lamonte Ingram in the 152 lb weight class.

Visiting Jones High School was a great way to kick off 2018. It was so nice to visit and speak with many of you about Valencia's new campus coming to Downtown Orlando in partnership with the University of Central Florida. We are looking forward to welcoming you as students at the Downtown Campus in the fall of 2019 when the campus opens.
The new campus will be the first of its kind in Orlando and will offer a variety of opportunities for community and business partnerships, job training, and educational and career pathways.
Construction of the shared UCF and Valencia Downtown Campus is already underway. Once open, the campus will serve both Valencia and UCF students.
