In this space a week ago I shared that every school week during the 4th quarter will be a full one and that message holds true again for the week ahead (see upcoming events below). Later today we will also be issuing student report cards for the 3rd quarter. If you have a student at JHS, please review their progress as soon as possible keeping in mind that we continue to offer free tutoring opportunities as outlined in this week's calendar.

Vital Signs
Just released this week for 2017 by the U.S. Dept. of Labor . . .
Making sense of the chart: The odds of being out of work rise (higher unemployment rates are unfavorable) for Americans with less education while weekly paychecks increase nicely for those with more education (usual weekly earnings). This pattern holds year-after-year based on Labor Dept. research. Click on the chart above for more information.

This week's student spotlight shines brightly on seniors Tylyiah Andrews and Donayja Gates, who were both awarded FULL RIDE scholarships to Rollins College through the first-ever Rosen Scholarship at Rollins. All of their tuition, housing, meals, and books will be paid for through this scholarship for four years (approximately $65,000 per year). Tylyiah and Donayja went through an extensive interview process along with six students from other schools and their applications and interviewing skills impressed the panel so much that they were awarded the scholarships! If you see these two young ladies on campus, please let them know how proud we are of them. Special thanks to Guidance Counselor/Medical Magnet Coordinator/Rosen Parramore Scholarship Coordinator Mrs. Wells-Harris for playing an integral role in the success of these young ladies throughout their four years at Jones High School.

We are so thankful for our Athletic Trainer, Coach Masters! His day begins at 6:20am when the first bus rolls in and doesn't end until the last game/match/meet is finished, sometimes at 11pm! He always goes the extra mile to help students and staff. Here's what a few of our Tigers had to say about Coach Masters:
My favorite memory of Coach Masters is when I was new to Jones and I didn't know anyone, Coach Masters asked me how I was doing and welcomed me to JHS. He introduced me to the 3rd period class and if he hadn't done that I might not know anyone at Jones to this day. I just want to say THANK YOU to Coach Masters!

My favorite memory with Masters is when we had a conversation about my behavior and he asked, "what's different with you?", saying how some of my peers and I had similar stories, yet we behaved so differently. I couldn't find an answer, but that was the first time that I was asked that and I first realized that people are always watching you in whatever capacity. I thought he only knew me as an athlete and barely that because I wasn't hurt a lot. Mr. Masters and I had that conversation in my sophomore year and he proved to be someone trustworthy with great advice that I could comfortably have a conversation with. Thanks for everything, Masters!

Algebra I with Ms. Rhaburn and Ms. Richardson
Algebra I teachers Ms. Rhaburn and Ms. Richardson had a full house for Spring Break Camp. Students received small group instruction on topics like quadratic equations and functions to prepare them for the upcoming Algebra I EOC exam. Ms. Richardson was assisted by senior intern Elizabeth Peitz, who graduates from the University of Central Florida with a degree in Math Education on May 4.

FSA English Language Arts Prep with Mrs. Jones
English teacher and Book Club sponsor Mrs. Zelda Jones served two roles during Spring Break Camp: preparing her English students for the FSA ELA exam and quizzing her Book Club students to ensure they were ready for the OCPS Battle of the Books competition.

AP Literature and Composition with Mr. Green
Mr. Carl Green's AP Literature and Composition students came to Spring Break camp to practice strategies and take a mock AP exam.

Science with Senior UCF Interns Carlos Chinea and Gabby Harms
Senior UCF interns Carlos Chinea and Gabby Harms hosted a Spring Break Camp Biology and Chemistry blitz. On May 4, Carlos and Gabby will graduate with degrees in Science Education; Carlos specializing in Chemistry and Gabby in Biology. Both of these UCF students have been a huge asset to our Science department this year and we hope to have them as part of our team for the 2018-2019 school term.

Mathematics Using Khan Academy with Ms. Richardson
Ms. Charva Richardson used Tuesday and Wednesday's block testing schedule to have her students work on arithmetic sequences on Khan Academy. Don't forget that you can earn positive points for your time on Khan Academy when you add Ms. Kuehn as your coach.
