Hi Neighbors,

In just 9 days, neighbors across District 8 will gather as part of National Night Out (NNO). This is an annual community-building celebration with local first responders, law enforcement, and neighborhood watch leaders. NNO promotes public safety and truly creates stronger neighborhoods by encouraging neighbors to "come outside" and to connect with one another.

Last year District 8 hosted over 10 National Night Out celebrations large and small. District 8 neighborhood leaders have been long recognized for hosting some of the best NNO get-togethers from potlucks and BBQs to fully planned block parties. Don’t miss out this year! Check out some of the larger public NNOs near you in my newsletter (below).

Lastly, as we approach the one-month mark of CaliBunga’s grand opening, have you had a chance to stop by or add it to your summer activities list? If not, make sure you do! :)

Best,

Domingo Candelas

Councilmember, San José District 8

In the Community

Mail Theft Press Conference with Congressman Jimmy Panetta

In partnership with Congressman Jimmy Panetta and our local law enforcement agencies, my office held a press conference to address the persistent issue surrounding mail theft.

Many neighbors have been affected by this issue and it demands a response from all levels of government. We will continue to prioritize public safety and work with the necessary agencies to address crime in our community.

Neighborhood Ice Cream Social

One neighborhood went for extra credit this weekend and hosted a fantastic Ice Cream Social ahead of National Night Out!

They had over 55 neighbors stop by, and enjoy some games and ice cream while getting to meet their local police officers.

Summer's Day of Soldiers and their Families at Lake Cunningham

I had the privilege of sponsoring the annual “Summer’s Day of Soldiers and their families” event, where we honored the contributions of our Vietnamese veterans, and provided them and their families a day filled with community and fun.

TREBA Street Cleaning and Weed Abatement on Tully Rd

Together we can accomplish great feats! Thanks to the hard work and advocacy of the Tully Rd-Eastridge Business Association (TREBA), we have seen a big transformation along Tully Rd.

This stretch of weed abatement and street cleaning is just one recent example of the great work our collaboration can produce. I look forward to continuing to support the vitality of TREBA and the community in our shared passion for building stronger neighborhoods.

Community and Education Day at Eastridge Mall

In partnership with Eastridge and Evergreen Valley College, my office sponsored Community and Education Day! We saw over 200 participants engaging with our partner organizations to connect on valuable local resources.

Your Tax Dollars at Work

Extended Access at Lake Cunningham Regional Park

Effective August 1st, the pedestrian gate at White Rd and Cunningham Ave will be open from 6:30AM or sunrise and closing at sunset.

This adjustment in additional park access was made possible through the advocacy of local neighbors working with my office and PRNS. There is no better way to beat the heat than to get an early start on some laps around the lake.

Announcements

Water activities are a great way to stay cool and enjoy time with your friends and your family. However, if you aren’t careful, someone you care about could get hurt—or even drown. According to the CDC, drowning is one of the leading causes of death for children ages 1–14, and swimming pools are where the majority of those fatalities occur.

Remember, when it comes to water safety, be proactive and stay vigilant. This will help ensure a pleasant but safe water experience for everyone. For more information about swimming pool safety, please visit the SJFD Water Safety page for more information.
