Randallstown High senior completes "sweet" internship | | |
|
|
Daryah Govi-Amoussouvi, a rising senior at Randallstown High School and an aspiring architect, completed a summer internship with Innovative Party Planners that allowed her to apply her artistic interest and skills in the decorative arts.
The internship was arranged by Wanda Etheridge, the school's career navigator.
"Working with Innovative Party Planners was a really fun experience for me," Daryah says. "I had the opportunity to meet and work with amazing people and work hands-on the whole time. We were making candy decorations for the Hagerstown CandyFest, and it was absolutely delightful."
The rest of the story is in a new Summer Stories blog post.

Books about appreciating who you are
When we open books, we often step into the lives of others. In the books recommended this week by our wonderful colleagues in the Baltimore County Public Library Collection Department, we meet main characters who learn to appreciate their special gifts. The books include the story of a princess with a talent for cooking; a baseball player whose exuberance helps him through challenging times; a violin prodigy who experiences sound with all her senses; and a teen whose ghostly friends assist him in efforts to cross the border. See descriptions of all four books in this week's Dive into Summer Reading blog post, which is available in English and Spanish.
Please remember to stop by your local library branch to participate in the summer reading program, have them put together a Be Surprised Bundle for you, and take part in their many activities.

Spending time in nature
has multiple benefits for youth
| |
With this summer's record heat, we have all probably been spending more time inside. But did you know, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, that the average American is inside nearly 90 percent of the time?
A recent article in The Washington Post describes numerous research studies that confirm what many of us intuitively know: that time spent in nature is important for children's well-being. The experts say that being outside improves children's ability to think and understand, attention, memory, social skills, mood, self-esteem, coordination, independence, creativity, and physical health.
Here are some ideas to help your children make the most of their time outside:
- Start small and start where you are. Take advantage of your backyard, apartment complex, and nearby parks and playgrounds.
- Be a nature-loving role model.
- Put technology away when the family is outside.
- Encourage your child to play with others.

"Puppy Love" by Willa Prue, Grade 7, Dumbarton Middle School. Work is featured in 2024 Middle School Art Exhibition and received the Grade 7 First Place award.
Artist Statement:
"Puppy Love" started with a dog. One of my two dogs, specifically. In December 2023, my family adopted a black-and-white puppy under the temporary name of Sweet Potato. He was bubbly, snuggly, and adorably sweet – that is, until we found out he was a tiny force of destruction as well as a cuddly pup. But we took that bundle of chaos home, named him Hugo, and at 7 ½ months old, he is a bundle of exuberance, and, at the end of the day, joy. "Puppy Love" was inspired by my early days with Hugo when he would leap up at me when I got home from school with heaps of energy. He still does. And that’s why I made this art piece. I love you, Hugo. I can’t wait to grow up with you and keep having moments full of puppy love like this.
