10 Things Mentally Strong People Won't Do

Food For Thought:
One of the most creative  geniuses of the 20th century was once fired from a newspaper because he was told he lacked creativity. Trying to persevere, Disney formed his first animation company, which was called Laugh-O-Gram Films. He raised $15,000 for the company but eventually was forced to close Laugh-O-Gram, following the close of an important distributor partner.

Desperate and out of money,
Disney found his way to Hollywood and faced even more criticism and failure until finally, his first few classic films started to skyrocket in popularity.

the Sequoia Room

TOPIC: Sustained Effort/Focus
Presentation Title: Lost in the woods or on the path to success?
Speaker: Dr. Lee Volker Cox, Colonel, USAF (Ret)

For over 30 years, Dr. Lee-Volker Cox has been developing high performing, award winning teams.  A retired Air Force Colonel, he is a motivational speaker, photographer, and graduate school instructor in leadership, training, and organizational development.  Recognized for his leadership skills, Lee-Volker commanded numerous units including Thule Air Base, Greenland where he also served as the United States' Senior Representative to Greenland guiding international relations and spending considerable time with the native Inuits.

Born in Spokane, WA, he grew up in Seattle, where his parents still live.  The neighborhood entrepreneur, Lee-Volker could sell anything from dandelions to rocks and developed a recycling venture years before being green was in vogue. He has flown Global Positioning System (GPS) satellites, operated intercontinental ballistic missiles, was on the launch team for NASA's satellite validating Einstein's Theory of Relativity, was recognized as the Air Force's best public affairs officer and was at the Pentagon on September 11th.

Lee-Volker's photos have been in many publications and the Santa Maria Sun selected his debut public photo exhibition Life On Top of the World as a "Top 11 Arts and Entertainment Events" for 2013 and Berries, Blooms, Broccoli and Bulls as one of the "2015 Arts Events of the Year."  An active community member, he serves on the Allan Hancock Foundation Board, Leadership Santa Maria Valley Board of Directors, CoastHills Auxiliary Committee and is a St. Mary's School advisor.  Lee-Volker lives with his wife, Michelle, and their Miniature Schnauzer, Benny, on the beautiful California Central Coast.

 President's Message
Hello Members and Friends of the Santa Maria Women's Network.

Summer is beginning to fade and we can already find hints of fall in the décor in our stores and the flavors in our favorite restaurants.  This is absolutely my favorite time of the year.  Everything just seems so cozy!

The Santa Maria Women's Network has some great events planned for the fall starting with another fantastic speaker, Lee-Volker Cox at our October Meeting.  In November we will bring back our very popular "Samplings" event, where you will get the chance to sample and purchase products from many of our members, just in time for the holidays.  December, as always, will be our "Holiday Extravaganza", with chances to win beautiful gift baskets and our famous wine raffle, you won't want to miss it!

I would like to extend my special thank you to Ed Carcarey for speaking at our September meeting.  His topic of "Being Positive" really hit home for me and reminded me of how important it is in all aspects of our live to remain positive.

In keeping with our theme, "It's who you know", we will include a 3 minute spotlight as a raffle item each month and at each mixer.  We are hoping that this will help us know our members better, so we can network better.  There are several ways to get raffle tickets...purchase them, donate a raffle item, wear your name badge, and bring a friend to a meeting.  See Kristie at the hospitality table for tickets.

Looking forward to seeing you next month.

Yours Sincerely,
Jodi Radford

 Member Testimonial
Dear SMWN,

A few months ago, the YMCA's Shannon Seifert spoke to us and something she said really hit home to me-- when we're vulnerable with others, we get to know them on such a deeper, more personal level. So, in the interest of connecting with all of you on a deeper level, I'm going to be vulnerable here. But first, a brief introduction. My name is Sandra Fuhring and I am, first and foremost, a mom to my beautiful daughter, Evie Jean, and a wife to my spectacular husband, Steve Fuhring. I am also the President of Fuhring Electric, an electrical contractor on the Central Coast, and I am CALM's Development Associate in Northern Santa Barbara County. I  recently joined the board of the SMWN, and I participate on a variety of other volunteer committees in Santa Maria.

Now to get vulnerable. When I think about major "life defining" moments and times in my life, things that inspire me to be part of the SMWN and to be my best "me" in my dual employment roles, there are two major reasons I believe I'm here.

As a child, I was bullied. I was bullied intensely and often. And it wasn't by some giant kid asking for my milk money like you see on TV. I was bullied by my best friends. The girls who I rode bikes with, spent the night with, played after school with. And they were MEAN. My mom talks about how often I would come home crying because the girls stole something from me, or made fun of my glasses, or made fun of me for getting good grades, or told me I couldn't play with them today. It was so traumatic. I remember telling my mom I was sick so I could stay home from school on many occasions. For a lot of years I didn't trust women, I avoided deep friendships with girls, and my self esteem suffered immensely. However, I believe this experience has also influenced me in a positive way. Out of that experience, I entered the world of therapy and have a strong passion for helping struggling children. I also think it has made me see how important it is for women to build each other up. Women are vulnerable. We're vulnerable because we're told we're too fat or too thin or too "bitchy" or too passive etc etc. And the last thing we need is to tell each other that! I want to be a part of something where strong women support other strong women! That's what I love about the SMWN.

My second life defining experience was the experience of re-current miscarriage. Before giving birth to my beautiful baby last year, I lost three pregnancies. It was the darkest, most heart breaking time of my life. I spent months in my room avoiding everyone. I managed to put on a smiley face for work, but cried myself to sleep every night. I can't even begin to describe the devastation that comes with knowing your baby has died in your womb. I felt like even my own husband, who was also losing these babies, couldn't relate to me because it was MY body failing my babies. I also felt like many people were quite insensitive to my experience, often making comments about me needing to move on or about how I should consider myself lucky that I can get pregnant. Luckily I also had a few women in my life who were very supportive and who lifted me up. Ultimately, it took the birth of my daughter to help me feel healed from that experience, though I often wonder where I would be had I continued to struggle with fertility. With my healing came the realization of how precious life is, how much people need others to lean on, how we never know what people are experiencing or how they're experiencing it, and really how amazingly strong women are. I enjoy my work at CALM because we get to build up mothers and fathers and children and be their support system. I enjoy my involvement in the SMWN because I get to support others on their career, and often personal, journeys. And, in being a woman new to the construction field that is dominated by men, I need other strong women (and feminist men) around ME for support!

Thank you all for being a part of this network. And for being strong and successful and supportive of each other. I hope that I can offer my support to all of you in some way!

Warmly,
Sandra Fuhring
