Release of Giving USA 2022: The Annual Report on Philanthropy for the Year 2021
|
|
Total U.S. charitable giving remained strong in 2021, reaching $484.85 billion
|
|
- Individuals, bequests, foundations and corporations gave an estimated total of $484.85 billion to U.S. charities in 2021, growing 4.0% over the amount contributed in 2020.
- While total giving increased in current dollars, it remained flat (-0.7%) after adjusting for inflation.
- Giving by corporations increased 23.8%, totaling $21.08 billion (up 18.3%, adjusted for inflation), but that total represents just 0.7% of corporate pre-tax profits.
- Megagifts (defined as gifts of $450 million or more) made by some of America’s wealthiest donors totaled nearly $15 billion, representing about 5% of all giving by individuals in 2021.
- Giving to the category that includes national donor-advised funds increased 23.5%.
- Several types of nonprofits that struggled in 2020, such as health and the arts, experienced a recovery in 2021. Conversely, some types of nonprofits that saw strong growth in 2020, such as education and human services, did not fare as well in 2021.
- Giving to the arts increased 27.5% and giving to environment and animal causes increased 11%.
For further analysis and information about the report, please visit IU’s press release or you can read the article in The Conversation written by Anna Pruitt and Jon Bergdoll, two of the lead researchers for Giving USA 2022.
