The Tilton Award memorializes the extraordinary body of work of MSD's first President, James Tilton, MD (1745-1822), physician, soldier, patriot, and inventor born in Kent County, Delaware. Dr. Tilton was one of the first pioneers of infection control and established the first isolation wards for contagious diseases during the Revolutionary War and afterwards in the War of 1812. He also served as the first President of the Medical Society of Delaware (1789-1822).

2024 Honoree

Tilton Award honorees are selected for outstanding characteristics such as leadership, vision, innovation, a pioneering spirit, medical excellence, advancing the profession, courage, tenacity, perseverance, life-long commitment to service, and for being both highly principled and recognized as both a statesperson and an ambassador for the profession of medicine.


This year the Medical Society of Delaware and the Tilton Society of Delaware are honored to recognize


Louis E. Bartoshesky, MD, MPH

Pediatrician and Clinical Geneticist, retired


Dr. Bartoshesky is being honored for his service to the Medical Society of Delaware and the medical community, both locally and nationally. As a respected physician, he was dedicated to providing exceptional care to patients, offering personalized care tailored to each patient's unique needs. His commitment to the patient's well-being extends beyond traditional medical practice, working to build trusting relationships and fostering open communication. Highly principled, he dedicated his career to understanding genetics to improve the lives of women, infants, children, and children with special health needs.


For his commitment to excellence in medicine, he will be presented with the coveted Tilton bust.


Previous honorees include: Nancy Fan, MD (2023); Richard W. Henderson, MD (2022); Ray Blackwell, MD (2021); Garret H.C. Colmorgen, MD (2020); Nicholas J. Petrelli, MD (2019); Stephen R. Permut, MD (2018); and the late G. Dean MacEwen, MD (2017). 


Our event this year will be a cocktail / hors d'oeuvre reception - black tie optional.
