Jill Bullitt's paintings combine layers of translucent color with dense and more energetic applications of paint that range from the calligraphic to the architectural in feeling. In some pieces color and line are separate but responsive elements, and in others, color is supported by the linear geometry. A selection of mixed media (gouache, acrylic, crayon, and collage) works on paper dating from 2009 to 2012 will be on view. Jill Bullitt received her MFA from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and her AB in Art from Stanford University. She currently lives and works in North Carolina. Bullitt has had recent solo shows at the Espy Foundation in Oysterville, Washington (2010) and the Bickett Gallery in Raleigh, North Carolina (2005 and 2004). This will be her first solo show at the Seders Gallery. Her work has been included in numerous group exhibitions, most recently: Cowgirls at the Brik Gallery in Catskill, New York (2012), Regional Artist Showcase Exhibition featuring recent Artist Project Grant Recipients at the Betty Ray McCain Gallery in Raleigh (2011), Pulp at the Visual Art Exchange in Raleigh (curated by Kate Shafer, Exhibitions Manager, Contemporary Art Museum in Raleigh, 2011), N.E.W. (22nd annual) at the Visual Art Exchange (curated by Elysia Borowy-Reeder, Executive Director, Contemporary Art Museum, Raleigh, 2011), and Morris Graves Centenary Invitational at the Rock Dement Gallery in Seattle (2011). Bullitt has received fellowships from the Espy Foundation, the Vermont Studio Center, and the Montana Artists Refuge and a Regional Artist Project Grant from the United Arts Council of Wake County, North Carolina. She was a finalist for the American Academy of Arts and Letters Painting Award.

| Merle Martinson's work is characterized by the flurries of brush strokes he uses to mix and layer color, lay out formal structure, and build surface. Often the paintings themselves appear to hover over rather than be connected to their paper or canvas supports. Recently Martinson has been painting outdoors, and some of these small landscapes will be included in the show alongside his more abstract work. He has also drawn on these plein air paintings as inspiration for some of his larger canvases. These canvases as well as smaller paintings on canvas and paper will be included in the show. Merle Martinson's last solo show at the Seders Gallery was in 2010. His work has been featured in two group exhibitions at the gallery: Happy Birthday, Francine in 2010 and Ten Painters in 2006. Martinson is a graduate of Pacific Lutheran University in Tacoma and lives and works in Seattle. |
| In much of his work Robert McNown has played with the idea that the whole can be seen as the sum of its parts-often a multitude of small, repetitive, and sometimes mechanically-made marks-and in support of this notion, he often composed with the intention of allowing the parts to fill all the available space. This time-consuming process has worked well for McNown, but recently he began feeling constrained and decided to do things differently. In December 2011 he began making one drawing each day. To avoid lingering over its production he had to abandon the obsessive mark making and allow unfilled space to play a role in the work. McNown began picking up scraps of paper and small objects that he found on his daily walks to use as jumping-off places for the work. The new drawings combine these collaged elements with mixed media on Rising museum board. The show will feature ten to twelve works with a notebook containing printouts of other drawings in the series. Robert McNown's last solo show at the Seders Gallery was in 2011. His work was included in Happy Birthday, Francine at the Seders Gallery in 2010, Line Dance at Gallery 110 in Seattle (2008), and OBSESSIVE Drawings & Paintings at the Steele Gallery at Gage Academy in Seattle (2007).
