What can neighbors do to address crime?
1.
NETWORK- Get to know your neighbors, who should be at their house and when, what kind of vehicles they drive, etc. Watch out for one another!
2.
KEEP SERIAL NUMBERS- Create a list of your valuables - take photos and record serial numbers, either digitally or written.
3.
CREATE COMMUNITY- Become involved with the neighborhood. Attend meetings, volunteer for committees, etc.
4.
KEEP WATCH- If you see something suspicious, call it in.

Have you recently spotted people toting trash bags while jogging? Or their hands filled with old plastic bottles? You might soon.
Sweden's latest fitness craze - plogging - is making its way to U.S. shores. The term is a mash-up of jogging and the Swedish "plocka upp," meaning pick up. In this case, litter.
Across Europe, there are plogging groups in Scandinavia, Germany and beyond. In the United States, it's just starting to catch on among exercisers who are fed up with rubbish along their route.
"I'm not going to just let litter sit there. I'm not going to just walk past that plastic bottle," said plogger and Alexandria resident Emily Wright. "It's not that I don't think it's gross to pick it up. I do. But I also think it's gross for a person to not take responsibility for it."
According to the Swedish-based fitness app
Lifesum, which earlier this month made it possible for users to track plogging activity, a half-hour of jogging plus picking up trash will burn 288 calories for the average person, compared with the 235 burned by jogging alone. A brisk walk will expend about 120.

STEP ONE- PRESERVE THE CORNER
After the demolition, actual construction will perhaps not begin on that lot for from 6-10 years. So what can be done?
Catalina Vista and Steve Kozachik are advocating for the city (which owns the parking lot) to create a vegetated space. Will the developer come on board and ameliorate his space (under the building)?

STEP TWO - INFLUENCE THE FINAL DEVELOPMENT
Combined neighborhoods of the Grant Road Coalition: Jefferson Park, Mountain First, SAMOS, Campbell/Grant, and Catalina Vista are working on a White Paper which will recommend the development which would be compatible with the surrounding neighborhood plans.

Campbell/Speedway project-Palm Shadows Apts

The ownership has had feedback from many that there is not an easy way to understand this project short of reading the entire PAD or having attended one of our presentations. As such, the ownership has spent the past few weeks working on a website that they hope is easy to navigate and has the most relevant and questioned information. The site is at

. You will find a Home page, Process page, FAQs, Studies, Team and Contact. At the bottom you can link to the entire PAD document quickly and efficiently. The "Studies" page also has links to the studies within the PAD document so people do not have to sift through the entire PAD document to read the studies. They hope this is helpful so people can see and understand the proposal better.

Buffelgrass has invaded Jefferson Park

Buffelgrass has moved into the alleys of Jefferson Park. Now is the time to check your alley for this plant, before it starts spreading its seeds. Remove by digging out the plant and its roots. Bag up in trash bag and dispose to prevent spreading the seeds.
How do you know it's buffelgrass? Watch for these:
- Tiny hairs at the points where leaves attach to the stems
- Bottlebrush-shaped seed heads that look purple when the plant is green

The UA has started the process of reviewing and revising its Master Plan, of particular importance to those neighborhoods abutting the UA, is the subject to water run-off from the UA, housing of students, and further encroachment into neighborhoods by UA sponsored buildings. i.e. Honors Dorm

Seeking old photos, oral histories

This newsletter has featured images which document the history of the Jefferson Park neighborhood. The Friends of Jefferson Park, Inc will continue to research and seek photos from private sources that illustrate the deep historic and cultural ties of this neighborhood. The Jefferson Park website has a slide show of some of the images collected so far.
