VIDEO HIGHLIGHT OF THE WEEK:

Angry Bird Plays
Angry Bird Plays "Now's the Time" by Charlie Parker, AKA "Bird"

Video highlight of Halloween week at the Jazz House!  Julius Tolentino, director of the Jazz House Big Band and the Organ Messengers  ensemble, dresses up as an Angry Bird and goes all out playing Charlie Parker's "Now's the Time"! A tune well chosen for his costume, considering that Charlie Parker, also known as "Bird", was one of the most influential improvising soloists in jazz and a central figure in the development of bebopMr. T never misses a beat!

2015 Year-End Appeal
Be the First to Give during our Year-End Giving Campaign!

Jazz House Kids students come from very diverse backgrounds, but they all share one thing in common: Their love of music!

Our mission aims to bridge the gap in the arts by making sure that every child has access to a quality music education. We address students' needs in many ways: from in-school programmatic support, tuition assistance, and private lessons, to delivering instruments, helping with college applications, and arranging transportation or even overnight accommodations during our Summer Jazz Workshop. At the Jazz House, in the schools, and in the community, we engage more than 1,200 emerging musicians every year, who in turn share the gift of music with more than 20,000 people annually.

Now more than ever, your support is critical to our work.  Help us continue to transform young lives through jazz by donating to Jazz House Kids today.

Thank you for supporting
 our mission!

NEWS @ the Jazz House
By November, the Jazz House runs like a well-oiled machine, with students fully engaged in their busy routines. We're so proud of all our students, because committing to music takes lots of tenacity and passion... And setting aside some time everyday to practice and rehearse takes discipline!

At Jazz House Kids, our amazing teaching artists inspire and cultivate our students' growing talents on a daily basis, and we're also thrilled when we get surprise visits from incredible musicians that can attest to the power of perseverance and dedication! Recently, wonder drummer Jerome Jennings came along with Jazz House Kids Artistic Director Christian McBride, and hung out with the kids and Big Band director Julius Tolentino! Here was music and mentoring at its finest, with one of the most sought-after drummers in the Tri-State area and beyond! A dedicated educator, Jennings is a graduate of the Juilliard School of Music and a past recipient of the prestigious Morse Fellowship.

NEWS: In the Schools

Jazz House Kids continues to make important strides in the schools, where we serve more than 600 elementary, middle and high school students throughout the year in the Newark Public Schools alone. Last week, we returned to Abington Avenue School in Newark, where the Jazz House Music Club serves 5th to 8th graders each week. Now in its 5th year, the Music Club will be taught by Jazz House teaching artist Anthony Ware, a talented saxophonist, dedicated music educator, and graduate of Rutgers'  Mason Gross School of the Arts . The assistant teaching artist is Latin percussionist Brevan Hampden, a graduate of North Carolina Central University, currently pursuing his Master's degree at Queens College. This program is part of Jazz House Kids' Newark Arts Initiative, made possible in part by the support of Don Katz and Leslie Larson, the Rivendell Foundation, the Silver Family Foundation, the Turrell Fund, and the Victoria Foundation, as well as our many generous individual donors.

Students at Abington Avenue School meet teaching artists Anthony Ware and Brevan Hampden during the launch of the Jazz House Music Club.

NEWS: In the Community

Our Emerging Musicians Community Concert prog ram (EMC2) has been busy these past few weeks!

First up, the Jazz House Ambassadors went on the road to the chocolate capital of the world -- Hershey, PA-- to take part in The Really Big Show, a fundraiser presented by Morgan Stanley on behalf of Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Capital Region

Our amazing student performers also set the tone during  an Open Book Open Mind talk presented by the Montclair Public Library, with host and Jazz House Kids supporter Jim Johnson. The open reading session was conducted by  Elizabeth Alexander, best known as the poet who composed and read "Praise Song for the Day" at President Obama's first inauguration. Alexander read  from her new memoir, titled "The Light of The World".

Other EMC2 performances included the 10th Anniversary Gala for Write On Sports, a nonprofit aimed at encouraging youth to write by teaching them to write about sports. Our Emerging Musicians also played at the official opening for 211 Broad Street at Red Bank, a recently readapted historic building.
