New Cadets Endure Hell-Day

Police Academy (not the movie) Covington PD's six new recruits kicked off their training with a grueling day of cross-fit. They face 16 weeks at the Academy, then 16 weeks of Field Training.

Big Thanks to United Way Volunteers

Big thanks to the United Way volunteers that spruced up the Recreational ball fields. Workers from Entergy, Chevron and Target built benches, painted fence and deck (which they had previously built) and restored the art work on the trail. Very Cool.

Congratulations 20 Families in 48 months!

Pastor Fred Taylor of Christ Temple Church (CTC) blessed the new home of Colleen Dixon and her two daughters. Collen has done a wonderful job decorating the interior. Members of Christ Temple Church donated a truckload of household goods to get the Dixons off to a good start : ). The front yard has some rough spots, no sod and at least one azalea needs a little more soil. Rabbi David of Congregation of Beth Hallal blessed the new home of Hubert and Joyce Cyprian and their four children. Of course, Hubert's mask was decorated with a clarinet and saxophone : )

Community Service Opportunity - The excitement of the new homeowners is palpable as they move into safe, clean and affordable housing. However, there is a concern. In general, the new residents do not have the financial means nor physical ability to properly finish their yards. Come Spring, they will lack the means to properly maintain those yards. If you, someone you know or your organization would like to consider helping (from as little as raking out the current rough spots to as much as donating grass in the future or, this Spring, adopting a small yard to help maintain), please e-mail me at mayormark@covla.com. It's a good thing.

Covington Bank and Trust Company (SE Corner Columbia and Boston Street)

Today this same building is Columbia Street Mercantile. Of particular interest is that the original Smith Hardware is immediately to the right of the two story structure. In the old picture above it is a two story building. After one of the fires, the first floor was salvaged, but the second floor was removed (pictured below). Today, in Shoefflé, one can see the original brick on an interior wall.
