Ellen's Book Review

Michael Stanley’s

Detective Kubu series (8 books so far)

This enthralling and enlightening series of immensely readable page-turners offers a vivid portrayal of Botswana’s landscapes, cultures, and social issues, but it is the hugely appealing character of Detective Kubu - a wonderfully large man in appetite, size, humor, and heart - that makes you a loyal reader. The books are best read in order. Book 1, A Carrion Death, leads Kubu into a murder investigation in the world of politics and diamond smuggling. Book 2, The Second Death of Good Luck Tinubu, an atmospheric story of money, murder, and hidden motives, sends Kubu to a remote bush camp in northern Botswana. In book 3, Death of the Mantis, a fantastic read, a killer stalks the Kalahari Desert, and what Kubu discovers there will test all his powers of detection . . . and his ability to remain alive.

Virtual Rock & Roll Book Club - In Partnership with WMVY

Wednesday, January 17th

7pm

Whelden Library joins WMVY radio station for a virtual Rock and Roll Book Club! The book is titled "This is What it Sounds Like - What the Music You Love Says About You" written by Berklee College of Music's award-winning professor of cognitive neuroscience Susan Rogers. Early in her career, she was one of the very first female sound engineers in the music business, eventually becoming Prince's chief sound engineer on Purple Rain. Susan later became one of the most successful female record producers ever.

Radio host Polly Simpkins will interview Susan Rogers and we will discuss the book and the music we love. This book is a vehicle for discussion or listening and there is absolutely no need to have read the book to join. You are welcome to join with cameras on or off, be part of the discussion, or just listen.
