President's Message
As we step into 2023, I'd like to take this opportunity to wish you all a very Happy New Year.

The New Year always brings with it a great opportunity for contemplation and renewal. With that said, I’d like to ask you, our members and community at large, how we can help you in 2023. What would you like your BABC to do for you this year? Please take a moment to complete our quick survey and give us your ideas and feedback. Thank you.

At the BABC OC our mission is to facilitate and foster collaborative relationships between people, businesses, and cities in Orange County and the UK. We thank you for supporting our mission this past year and we look forward to bringing you a full program of events in 2023.

Without a doubt 2022, has been a rollercoaster for most of us. The United Kingdom and the Commonwealth lost a greatly cherished and much-loved Monarch who had been an ever-present and steadying influence on all our lives for over five generations. Like most of her generation, the young Princess Elizabeth served the Allied cause during World War II. She understood and was grateful for the enduring friendship and partnership between the two great nations of the USA and UK. It is that same legacy and spirit with which continues through BABC OC today and in to the future.

Finally, thank you to everyone who attended our Christmas Luncheon and generously donated to help fund our Scholarship Program. We're delighted to report that the Christmas Luncheon was the largest attendance we've ever had which will assure that we will once again continue our search for more disadvantaged students from Orange County to send on the same positive, life-changing experience in the UK in 2023. BABC OC is proud of how many young people that we've helped over the years.

From my family to yours, I wish you a safe and prosperous 2023!

Sincerely,
Lee Evans

BABC OC BOARD MEMBER ANNOUNCEMENT!
We're absolutely delighted to announce new Board Member, Alana Stott MBE. Alana was recently honoured with an MBE for her services to vulnerable women and mental health. She is set to release five books in 2023 starting with a series of empowering children’s books titled Mollie’s Adventures.
Alana is a wonderful addition to the BABC OC Board of Directors and we are honoured to have her.
Welcome to the team Alana!
Mollie's Adventures: Mollie loves adventures of all kinds, especially those that make her laugh, fill her with joy, and cause her to feel wild and free!
One day while she is happily climbing a tree, her friend, Sophie, tells her to come down before she hurts herself. After Mollie reluctantly inches her way to the ground, she decides to find another adventure. But as she tries to ride a horse, soar on a roller coaster, and zip down a water slide, she is stopped each time by a fearful yet well-meaning friend who tells her she should not try anything dangerous or new. Now it is up to Mollie to teach everyone around her the importance of living her own way.
In this charming tale, a little girl with a thirst for adventure decides to embrace her unique abilities and walk her own path through life.

JANUARY MEMBER SPOTLIGHT -
MAGGIE MORA - North Hills Realty

1. What is your hometown and country? I was born & grew up in Gloucester, but my Parents were from Donegal, Ireland. Growing up, I was so fortunate to have family in both Britain and Ireland.
2. What year did you move to the US and why? I moved in February 1988 to the US to Worcester, Massachusetts, to work as an intake caseworker with juvenile delinquents. I had graduated the previous year and was working in an accounting department at a dental company, not really having a clue what I was doing! :) I saw an advertisement in the Guardian newspaper to work with youth in America, I was intrigued. I thought it would be a great way to start my career and get to travel to America.
3. Where do you work and what’s your job title? My early years in America, I worked primarily as a social worker. About 9 years ago, I became a Real Estate Agent and work for North Hills Realty located in Tustin.
4. What’s your favourite word? Cheers 😊
5. What's your least favorite word? Phlemg ☹
6. What’s your favourite sport or hobby? I love most sports but especially football. I am a lifelong fan of Liverpool FC. Growing up, I played netball & tennis. I love to walk especially on the beach, go to concerts or listen to live music both indoors & outdoors.
7. What profession other than your own would you like to attempt and
why? - I have worked as a Real Estate Agent for 9 years and love it. I love working with people and if there was a job that allowed me to travel back & forth from America to Britain / Ireland, I would love to give it a go. It would be great to get a "fix" of home more often.
8. If you could go back in time, knowing what you know now about
living and working in OC what advice would you give YOU, arriving
here on Day 1? Not so much advice I would give myself but action to take upon arriving here, would be to join groups/organizations that expats belong to as soon as possible. The support system and feeling of connection is priceless.
9. What’s the best advice anyone ever gave you in OC? "Work really hard and your opportunities to have a great life in America will be endless."

BAB CEO UPDATE
Duncan Edwards
CEO
British American Business
A very happy new year to members and friends of BritishAmerican Business. I hope everyone was able to enjoy at least a few days of downtime before heading back into the fray.

The new year newspapers are full of the usual forecasts and predictions for the year ahead which are always worth reading to get a sense of the prevailing mood as much as for the likely accuracy of the forecasts. In fact, the one thing you know for certain is that the forecasts, especially economic, are going to be wrong, it is just a question of by how much! But the more interesting stories are the qualitative predictions, the evaluation of risks, the sense of optimism or otherwise that is in the minds of the authors, the economists, the think tanks and journalists that produce these pieces.
