As we wrap up the first month of the year, the WVGOP is eager to provide an update on where the Party stands and where it is going! Please expect these updates throughout the cycle.

WVGOP Leaders File Candidacy Paperwork for Donald J. Trump for President in 2024

This month, WVGOP leaders officially filed President Donald Trump's candidacy paperwork to be on the ballot in West Virginia in 2024. This filing comes after the WVGOP Chairwoman, Secretary of State, Attorney General, and ACLJ successfully defended Donald Trump's right to be on the ballot this year in federal court.

“This is a massive win for West Virginians, Americans, and the rule of law. This month, we took steps to place Donald Trump's name on the ballot, and our voters can rest assured: Donald Trump will be on our ballot, and our voters will have the right to vote for the candidate of their choice!" said Chairwoman McArdle.

At the WVGOP Winter Meeting this month, the State Executive Committee voted unanimously to endorse former President Trump for President in 2024.

WVGOP State Executive Committee Leaves Primary Election Rules in Place for 2024, Votes to Close in 2026

At Saturday's WVGOP State Executive Committee Meeting in Charleston, the committee adopted a resolution to limit participation in the 2026 Republican Primary Election to only registered Republicans. This resolution will not affect the 2024 election. Unaffiliated voters may still choose to vote in the Republican primary this May. After this election, the WVGOP will take requisite steps to grow the Party and educate the electorate of this decision in preparation for the 2026 election cycle.

Republicans Dominate Democrats During the Candidate Filing Period

The 2024 candidate filing period closed on Saturday, and notwithstanding valid postmarked filings received via mail in the coming days, the Republican Party showed immense strength, registering candidates in roughly twice the number of races as the Democrats. November will be here before we know it, and Republicans are poised to reach historic heights in West Virginia this fall!

Matt Herridge Elected Chairman

At the Winter Meeting of the WVGOP State Executive Committee on January 27, Dr. Matt Herridge, of Wood County, was unanimously elected to fill Chairwoman Elgine McArdle's unexpired term. Herridge, a clinical psychologist, business owner, Republican advocate, and former WVGOP Finance Chair, assumed the position of Chairman upon the adjournment of the meeting. Former Chairwoman McArdle announced after the meeting that she decided to step down to pursue an open seat on West Virginia's Intermediate Court of Appeals.

On his election, Herridge said the following:

“I am truly honored and humbled by the trust our Executive Committee has placed in me to help guide our Party through this very important election cycle. As I now assume the role of Chairman, I am well aware of the exciting year we have ahead — but also the hard work that must go into making this cycle a major success for our State and our Party. Our committee members, county parties, elected officials, candidates, donors, and grassroots volunteers are all gearing up for a busy year, and I pledge to be by their side as we work to strengthen our Republican dominance in West Virginia for years to come.”

Manchin: Retired!

Beginning in the fall, the West Virginia Republican Party launched its “Retire Manchin” digital campaign, through which, voters were made aware of Senator Manchin’s voting record and liberal tendencies.

Senator Manchin has now announced his decision to not run for re-election. This is great news, but we continue to be laser-focused on winning that Senate seat, whether the Democrat nominee is Joe Manchin or not. It is time West Virginia elect a Republican to his seat. Our full statement on this matter can be found here.

The next 10 months of this election cycle will be very lively, and the West Virginia Republican Party looks forward to being a true resource to its elected officials, candidates, State Executive Committee, and all Republican voters throughout the process. Please stay tuned for future events and announcements from the Party, and never hesitate to reach out if you have any questions!
