PARTNER SPOTLIGHT: Bay Area Conservation Corps Chapters
This month, Cal-IPC piloted our first invasive plant management trainings for local Conservation Corps around the Bay Area!
We partnered with the
San Francisco Conservation Corps
, the Oakland
Civicorps
, and the
San Jose Conservation Corps
to introduce corps members to regional ecology and invasive plant management. Local experts came from non-profits, public agencies, and private consulting firms to describe restoration projects. Presenters also described professional pathways that corps members can explore.
Each Conservation Corps provides opportunities for youth 17-27 years old to earn high school diplomas and engage in paid job training experience, focusing on conservation, recycling, and construction. Cal-IPC’s trainings prepared pre-diploma students for future fieldwork and strengthened the knowledge of post-diploma workers, some of whom are actively managing invasive plants on projects around the Bay.
It is exciting to help corps members build their skills and explore invasive plant management as part of their career development. A big thank you to partners from the Presidio Trust, Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy, San Francisco Recreation & Parks Department/Natural Resources Division, East Bay Regional Parks District, City of Oakland Public Works/Environmental Services, Grassroots Ecology, Americorps, Midpeninsula Regional Open Space District, and Ecological Concerns, Inc. for providing expertise to these trainings!
We encourage you to consider how you might join or work with a local Conservation Corps. See their websites
