Note from the Director

Writing this during a week with the coldest temperatures in a decade, it is good to be reminded that warmer weather will soon return.

Meanwhile, at times like this, Little River Canyon seems to be different in every way. The freezing mist, icicles, and flurries are beautiful, but as a reminder, the wilderness can be dangerous for outdoor enthusiasts as well as wildlife. Thankfully, bears den, small mammals find cavities, and many birds practice torpidity, perching on one foot and tucking their heads under their feathered wings. Survival is a miracle!

With all the cold outside, it’s a great time to think about the warm Canyon Center assisted by geothermal technology and on February 16th, it will be superheated by some of the hottest jazz music ever! We hope that you’ll check out the ticket link below, and as always, study up on our upcoming hikes and programs.

Happy New Year from the Canyon Center staff and all of us here at JSU. We plan on having a lot for you to do in 2024!

All the best,

Pete Conroy, Director

Field School Focus

As we look back on 2023, we are proud to have connected with over 7000 people through field trips, outreach programs, and camps! We had so much fun exploring and learning through hiking, games, and hands-on learning. We can’t wait for all the adventures in 2024. Call us today to book your field trip or outreach program.

Thank you to our friends and the students at Sand Rock Elementary School for helping us collect over 500-gallon jugs to construct a wonderful, recycled igloo for our Canyon Christmas program!

The JSU Field School kicked off the 2024 by partnering with Desoto State Park to host an extreme seven-mile hike on January 1st. We started the new year off by making new friends and getting some miles in. We hope you will join us as we hike all the trails in the Little River National Preserve this year.

We hope to see you at one of our exciting classes like our Seasonal Wellness herbalism classes, basketry workshops, fly-tying workshops, trail challenges, art classes, and more!

Assistant Director, JSU Field School,

Rebekah Moore Taylor
