MLK Day of Service

Mark your calendar for MLK's Day of Service on MondayJanuary 152024, at the Harriet Tubman Cultural Center, 8045 Harriet Tubman Lane, Columbia, from 10 a.m. to

2 p.m.

In the tradition of celebrating Dr. Martin Luther King's birthday as “A Day On, not a Day Off,” Howard County's Office of Human Rights & Equity has planned a variety of service activities for all ages that offer the community the opportunity to participate in honoring the civil rights leader’s legacy through education, engagement, and service.

 

On SundayJanuary 14, a special reception and celebration will take place at Howard Community College's Horowitz Center - click here for details and to register.

 

MLK's Day of Service 2024 follows on MondayJanuary 15, at the Harriet Tubman Cultural Center, 8045 Harriet Tubman Lane, Columbia, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. [two shifts 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.*; 12 p.m. to 2 p.m.]  

{*a select number of folks are needed from 8:30 a.m. to 10 a.m. to help with breakfast set-up}

 

Click here for a listing of planned activities. Members are asked to please email Karen Bryant to indicate their particular areas of interest, ideally by Friday, January 5, but no later than Tuesday, January 9. LHC volunteer names/emails will then be shared with the Office of Human Rights & Equity which is directly managing volunteer assignments and will assign individuals slots in advance; there will be no walk-in volunteer assignments.

Recruitment Season Underway




LHC is looking ahead to Leadership Premier 2025. Do you know someone who may be a great candidate? An Information Breakfast is scheduled for Friday, January 19 from 9 to 10 a.m. at The 3rd, 10215 Wincopin Circle, Suite 100, Columbia. Please share this event with your networks and encourage them to register and/or contact Tim Payne, LHC's President and CEO, to learn more!

Leadership U (LU) is LHC's impactful leadership program for high school juniors who reside and/or attend school in Howard County. The application and related documents will be available online on January 10, and due for submission by April 1. Interested applicants for the 2024 program should be current sophomores, entering their junior year during the 2024/25 school year

  • Tuesday, January 30 from 5:30 to 7 p.m. (In-person/location TBA)
  • Thursday, February 29 from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. (Virtual)
  • Wednesday, March 13 from 5:30 to 7 p.m. (In-person/location TBA)

Leadership Essentials 2024 continues with two sessions in January! The cohort will review the results of their Strength Deployment Inventory assessment, form their Community Impact Project teams, and continue to meet one-on-one with their leadership coach.

A few Leadership Essentials coaches have joined Loyola’s ASPIRE Center for Continuing Education to offer coaching packages for individuals and teams.
