What Gregg’s been up to
In his role as co-chair of the AI Exploratory Committee for the National Association of Counties, Gregg is currently on a visit to the Bay Area in his home state of California. The purpose of this trip is to engage in discussions with key figures in the AI industry. People across the world are recognizing the potential that AI will bring to the economy and public sector, and America’s counties need to be prepared to address this innovation with the realization that AI technology is here to stay.
Earlier this month he was in Tallahassee for the start of the 60-day Florida legislative session where he learned about several bills being pushed that aim to regulate the use of artificial intelligence. One of the bills (SB972) proposes to create an artificial intelligence advisory council, another (SB850) would require transparency when AI is used in political advertisements. We’re already seeing in New Hampshire the havoc it can cause.
Yet another bill proposes (SB1680) to develop safety and transparency standards for content generated by artificial intelligence, while prohibiting its use for the creation of obscene material under certain conditions.
Other legislation expected to come out of the state capitol aims to curb social media use among minors, requiring social media companies to prohibit kids under 16 from creating accounts. Additional safeguards are also proposed for seniors and vulnerable adults when it comes to banking. We know all too well how people can fall victim to scams. The bill intends to protect from financial fraud those 65 and older as well as adults whose ability is impaired. We will keep an eye on these and others bills that affect Palm Beach County and we’ll let you know if they make it to the governor’s desk and survive the veto pen.
Our office has been hearing from many residents concerned about semi-truck parking. It is apparent that there is a shortage of truck parking facilities in Palm Beach County and throughout the nation. This is leading to unsafe situations for truckers as well as other motorists. We are seeing an increase in large semi-trucks being parked along roadways and in residential neighborhoods throughout the county, including in our district. Most neighborhood roads aren’t built to handle heavy semi-trucks; they damage roads, swales, and can make it hard for emergency vehicles to get around.
One area in the county that is particularly affected is The Acreage. In November the board took up this issue and took a first step in relaxing the rules for commercial vehicle parking in that area. Though Gregg supports making changes that allow for some additional parking to support home-based businesses, allowing semi-trucks in residential areas is not something he can get behind. To explain his position and considerations, Gregg wrote an opinion piece that ran in the Palm Beach Post.
On Thursday January 25 the board, without Gregg, will take up the issue again, and if it takes the next step forward the final meeting will be on February 22. We will keep you posted along the way.

Around a hundred area business leaders gathered at the Kravis Center on January 18th for a Business Development Board luncheon, followed by a conversation with several AI experts, moderated by Gregg.
The experts: Matthew Peters, Technology officer of CAI, Chris Nielsen, CEO and Founder of Levatas, Dr. Susan Schneider, Director of the Center for the future of Mind at Florida Atlantic University, and Ernie Fernandez, VP for state and local government at Microsoft.
Following a lively and insightful dialogue about the difference between AI and traditional computing, real-world uses of AI, emerging trends, and legal and ethical pitfalls, Gregg had this to say:

Jana, here. I’ve been playing around with ChatGPt a lot, trying to get better results by improving how I ask for information, or write my “prompt” in AI jargon. What has really helped me is looking at high-quality examples of others, like the 500+ prompts on this website (scroll down the page; they’ll appear on the left).
Of course I also asked CHatGPT how I can get better results, and it gave me some useful pointers, like: be clear and specific, and give it context. For more tips, check out the video below!
When ChatGPT gives you an answer it’s tempting to simply copy it word for word, but you better check the response because it can occasionally give a wrong answer, and make stuff up. When that happens, it’s called an AI hallucination (read more here).
That’s it for today. If you’d like us to write about a specific AI topic email us at district2@pbc.gov.
