Smithfield's Tar Heel Facility Recognized by NCDEQ
NC Facility is Exceeding Environmental Compliance
| |
The North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality recognized Smithfield Foods' Tar Heel, North Carolina, pork-processing facility as a Rising Environmental Steward for its continuing commitment to exceeding compliance with environmental regulations and maintaining a high standard of environmental excellence. NCDEQ's Environmental Stewardship Initiative recognizes and supports companies and facilities that go above and beyond to reduce their impact on the environment.
Smithfield's Tar Heel facility's wastewater treatment system produces renewable natural gas that provides power to the processing plant and more than 2,000 local homes and businesses. Tar Heel's reuse and reclaimed water systems send approximately 1 million gallons of water per day back to the refrigeration system and outdoor wash-down hoses to significantly decrease the facility's use of potable water.

UNC Students Strive to Reduce Campus Waste
Sustainable On-Campus Living
| |
|
While some aspects of on-campus living can create opportunities for waste to accumulate, there are ways University departments, student organizations and residents like UNC sophomore Emma Hedinger are striving to make residence hall life more sustainable. Moving in and moving out create the largest opportunities for students to generate waste, Allan Blattner, executive director of Carolina Housing said. In order to combat this, he said Carolina Housing provides extra opportunities at move-in to recycle cardboard, plastic film and Styrofoam.
During move-out, Carolina Housing hosts the "Don’t Ditch It, Donate It!" program with the OWRR, Carolina Thrift, Carolina Cupboard and TROSA Thrift Store. The program looks to collect and donate usable items that students no longer need. Carolina Housing estimates more than 366 tons of items have been diverted from landfills through the program.
