Declaring "Intentions" for the New Year |
|
2018 is here! As we welcome and begin a new year, it is a natural and universal time for the renewal of hopes, possibilities and wishes for moving forward into the
future.
In the context of this annual season of 'new beginnings,' it can be helpful to reflect on, and explore, the difference between declaring "intentions" and making New Year's resolutions.
Setting an intention allows one to more fully engage in, and focus attention on, the process itself, and constructive progress towards realization of an outcome, rather than emphasizing the results or outcome itself. In declaring or setting intentions we are less likely to get caught in focusing on the future and the outcome. As we work with our intentions, the cultivation of a mindful attitude of "one-day-at-a-time" and trusting the process, supports us as we take steps in the right direction. In that way we are always in the process of realizing our intention.
No matter what the issue or change that one is seeking, intentions cultivated and developed in mindfulness meditation practice can serve as a powerful support in the process. Focusing on intentions can help avoid the usual pitfalls and obstacles that arise in the annual ritualistic setting of New Year resolutions.
Highlighting 3 key meditative intentions of beginner's mind, non-judgment and patience bring us into the present moment and experience the power of now. Healing, happiness, change and life all happen in the here and now.
To see with new eyes, to be gentle with and accepting of ourselves, and to take it one breath, and one moment, at a time, will help us trust the process and naturally move us forward in a new direction toward the fulfillment of our intentions.

"While resolutions stem from our human-level self (intellect or emotions), intention comes from our essential nature, which accesses an energy source beyond our physical selves. The Institute of Noetic Sciences' President & CEO Dr. Marilyn Mandala Schlitz defines intention as "the projection of awareness, with purpose and efficacy, toward some object or outcome."
Based in awareness, intention carries with it dynamic creative power and inspiration. It stems from our inner yearnings, not from external input. Ongoing research indicates that our state of mind directly influences our life and that clearly set, focused intention can result in amazing and lasting change. We can learn to reach beyond our limited, conditioned thinking and access desires that resonate with who we really are life."

For 2018, individually and collectively, may we be open to new possibilities, may we be non-judgmental with ourselves and each other and may we live in the NOW guided by our authentic true selves..
May we enjoy the process of setting and realizing
all our intentions. T
he best of times is now.
Warm Wishes for a Happy Healthy Peaceful Joyful New Year!
