Watch Out For The Warning Signs of Depression

Depression is an often overlooked mental condition in the elderly, and society's belief that feeling blue is just something that happens as we age means this serious health concern routinely goes undiagnosed and untreated. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, people who have multiple chronic conditions and/or limited functioning are at increased risk for depression. With over 80% of older adults in this category, it is no surprise that this demographic is at greater risk. What are the warning sings? Read our blog to find out!

Keep Your New Year's Resolutions Realistic

The key to sticking with your New Year's resolutions? Set specific, realistic goals and don't try to overhaul your entire life at once. If you are a couch potato, don't set yourself up for failure by pledging to work out for an hour everyday. Set small goals, like walking or biking 3 times a week or losing 10 lbs in two months. Reaching your goals will help keep you motivated for the long run.
The same concept applies to resolutions such as eating healthier or reducing stress. Set small, achievable goals and once you've attained them, set a more challenging one. If you are trying to eat more fruits and veggies, start every morning with a smoothie and/or have a small salad before dinner. You might find you are less likely to overeat unhealthy foods throughout the day after making these small changes. If stress is your problem, find ways to lighten your load. Family caregiving can be particularly stressful, so asking friends and family members for help or to chip in so you can bring in a professional caregiver a few times a week can free you up to focus on making you happier and healthier this New Year.
