Jackie Gendel - Fables in Slang
Opening reception: Friday, May 20, 6 - 8 pm
May 20 through July 2, 2011
Bryan Miller Gallery - 3907 Main Street, Houston, TX
Bryan Miller Gallery is pleased to present Fables in Slang, a solo exhibition by Houston-native, New York-based painter Jackie Gendel.
Gendel's exhibition title is lifted from an obscure but enduring work of vernacular moralist fiction, Fables in Slang, by American humorist George Ade. As the show's title indicates, some of Gendel's painting language is shorthand, as if painted in slang. Gendel refuses any moralism or narrative closure implied by the appropriation of Ade's title. Any resemblance between characters depicted, the work of George Ade, persons living or dead, from literary or popular culture, and the paintings themselves, in either modern or anti-modern sensibility, is purely coincidental.
