SUMNER ASSOCIATION OF NEIGHBORS SMALL GRANT
"ROCK THE BLOCKS OF SUMNER" UPDATE
Our goal continues to increase opportunities for equitable participation in neighborhood activities, building relationships and partnerships while improving livability and leadership skills of all our neighbors.
We received $2,977.50 from the Small Grants Fund from the Office of Community & Civic Life and Central Northeast Neighbors Coalition. Here is how the funds were used:
****COMPLETED PROJECTS***
SATURDAY, MAY 15, 2021 - NEIGHBORHOOD CLEANUP: This event was held on Saturday, May 15, 2021 at Helensview School. We took in over 6 tons of bulky waste plus 400 pounds of metal. This would not have been possible without our nine volunteers. This was one of the most successful cleanups we have ever held.
This cleanup would not have been possible without the wonderful volunteers we had. Special thank you to Henry and Janet Shannon, David Wiens, Jo Schaefer, Karen McAninch, Ronda Johnson, Dayvianae Johnson, Susan Bergdahl, Yvonne Rice
TUESDAY, JUNE 29, 2021 - ICE CREAM SOCIAL: As part of the grant funds Sumner, we treated our neighbors to a free Ice cream social. We also put up a canopy to shade the sun and offered bottled water. We had a good turnout and gave neighbors a chance to catch up. Ice cream was provided by Ice Cream Express.
TUESDAY, JUNE 29, 2021 - SAN LOT CLEANUP: Due to our recent heat wave, we did not put together a formal trash pickup, however at our ice cream social, we want to thank a few of our neighbors who did walk the area and pick up trash. We were also not able to plant, but may do so in the future when the weather cools.

Juneteenth (short for “June Nineteenth”) marks the day when federal troops arrived in Galveston, Texas in 1865 to take control of the state and ensure that all enslaved people be freed. The troops’ arrival came a full two and a half years after the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation. Juneteenth honors the end to slavery in the United States and is considered the longest-running African American holiday. On June 17, 2021, it officially became a federal holiday.
Oregon Governor Kate Brown signed House Bill 2168 into law, making Juneteenth an official holiday in Oregon on Saturday.
The bill passed unanimously in both the Oregon House and Senate earlier this month. Certainly, the bill is long overdue. I’m incredibly grateful for the Oregon Legislature for getting it passed this legislative session,” Brown said. And as I sign the bill, I remember and think of folks like Clara Peoples, her granddaughter Jenelle Jack and the countless others whose advocacy for years made the legislation possible.”
MORE FACTS ABOUT JUNE
- June is the month with the longest daylight hours of the year in the Northern Hemisphere, and conversely, June has the shortest daylight hours of the year in the Southern Hemisphere.
- June’s birthstone is the pearl, the Moonstone and the Alexandrite.
- The June birth flower is the Rose and the Honeysuckle.
- In 2009 June was the 662 most popular name for girls in the USA.
- June is derived from Juno, the goddess of marriage.
- In both common and leap years, no other month begins on the same day of the week as June. Weird, isn’t it?
- June is international men’s month.
- June is accordion awareness month, as well as candy, dairy and papaya month.

HISTORY OF EAST COUNTY
As I was researching the history of Parkrose, I found this article that was published March 2009 by the City of Portland Bureau of Planning & Sustainability and Historic Resources.
Have you ever wondered about East County, when it was formed and how? We may have published this article in an earlier newsletter, but for those new to the area this is a great read and one well worth sharing again. It is a long article, so please have patience.
The article about Parkrose begins on Page 12.
