From The Pastor
The “line in the sand” determining who’s “in” and who’s “out” regarding church seems to be more and more volatile and a lot thicker as of late. I recently read a quote by M. Tomlinson that stated the “church is not supposed to be a place of theological purity or rigid conformity to certain beliefs and conventions, but a mishmash of believers, doubters, dissenters and malcontents, each of whom is grappling in his or her own way toward a mystery that is God.”
Someone once said that the “church isn’t just for good folks, it’s for all people.” If we look at the life and ministry of Jesus, he never once excluded someone from the fold. In fact, when we read the Gospels, especially the Gospel of Luke, we see that Jesus makes a point that God goes to extreme lengths to enable others to know, especially the “outsiders,” that they have a community who loves them, who walks with them, and who challenges all of us to focus more on others than ourselves.
As we enter into these summer months, may we remember that “church” is not just a building. May we remember that “church” is more than simply meeting for an hour on Sunday mornings. May we remember that being “church” means we follow Jesus and allow God’s Spirit to soften our hearts so we can be agents of peace and wholeness in this world.
As always, I look forward to seeing you, especially in worship.
