Who are you looking for? New Old Friends is looking for a Touring Stage Manager to take responsibility for a safe and effective tour of Houdini’s Greatest Escape, a small-cast comedy thriller produced in association with Yvonne Arnaud Theatre.


The touring company will be made up of x4 performers and x1 Touring Stage Manager, all travelling together in a van.


What is the fee? £610 per week during rehearsals, £670 per week on tour and in London, £50 driving stipend (if applicable, van driver preferred but not necessary), £140 subsistence contribution for rehearsals and/or London run if staying away from home. Accommodation on tour will be provided by the company. No subsistence, per diems or any further monies will be paid during the touring period with the exception of missed holiday pay should additional dates be added.

At all times

• Represent New Old Friends in a manner consistent with the company values: compassionate, kind and patient.

• Work to foster a warm and collaborative relationship with all touring company members and the wider creative team.

• Act as Company Stage Manager

In rehearsal period

• Maintain a safe working area (sweeping stage before rehearsals, identifying and reporting risk)

• Ensure appropriate breaks are taken and that work resumes promptly following breaks.

• Create and maintain a prompt copy.

• Keep detailed rehearsal notes and disseminate to the wider creative team daily.

• When required film sections of rehearsal and upload to a shared drive for wider creative team.

• Assist with all reasonable marketing requests.

• Lead on the sourcing of props, and maintain records. This work is not expected to take place whilst also delivering core rehearsal room responsibilities (ie time would be set aside for it).

• Work with Sound Designer on integrating SND (Qlab) into rehearsals as early as possible.

• Relight the show whilst on tour. Basic knowledge of ETC desks/Nomad essential.

During touring period

• Maintain excellent intrapersonal relationships with fellow touring company. The touring company consists of the Touring Stage Manager and four cast members, all travelling together in the same van and sharing responsibility for get-ins and get-outs.

• Prepare & share weekly schedule (inc estimate travel times) with touring company, producers & production manager at least one full day before first move of the week.

• Liaise with venue staff on arrival times etc in collaboration with PM.

• Manage get-in, working with cast & in house crew.

• Relight the show whilst on tour. Basic knowledge of ETC desks/Nomad essential.

• Manage the sale of programs with venue staff.

• Manage each performance, ensuring performers have warm up time and giving backstage and FOH calls.

• Operate both SND & LX for the show (in some venues it will be necessary to operate one and call the other dependent on desk positioning).

• Manage get-out, working with cast and in house crew.

• Prepare and share show reports including subjective feedback on audience response.

• Manage & maintain stock of consumables.

• Be responsible for maintenance of set, costume and any technical equipment on tour and organise, with producers, any specialist repairs.

• Additional SM duties as required.

Health & Safety

• Actioning the production risk assessments. Take the appropriate actions required to minimise risk for all aspects of the on tour. Report accidents and incidents as appropriate.

• Be responsible for implementing the company’s Health and Safety policy for all productions.

• Ensure correct use of electrical and other technical equipment and where appropriate, giving instruction in Manual Handling.

Set / installation designer to co-create; an immersive sensory playscape installation based on the wonder of the seasons for Deaf, Disabled and Neurodivergent (DDN) children and young people. It will have a dual function as a set for two sensory adaptive performances with sensory content.


The Set/Installation designer will:


Have sensory or immersive installation/set experience in arts spaces or an absolute desire to make one with embedded access at the forefront of the designs.


Willingness to explore, play and innovate and participate in co-creation workshops with DDN children. An understanding or lived experience of Sensory Play or Sensory Profiles is useful.


Collaborative practice that has a full sense of experimentation.


Have a minimum of 3 fully designed and installed sets.

The R&D at Talking Birds is funded, the further development is subject to the successful outcome of ACE application.
