Tell us about the job

We are looking for an Associate Director to join the creative team for with TBTL’s co-production with Octagon Theatre Bolton and Stephen Joseph Theatre (the co-producers) of BRASSED OFF adapted by Paul Allen, based on the screenplay by Mark Herman and directed by Liz Stevenson

About the Production:

‘Three disasters. Two world wars, one bloody big depression. And every time, the band play on.’

Brass runs in Shane’s family, and in the midst of yet another cost of living crisis he looks back on the last great battle for the local pit and the defiant glory of Grimley Colliery Band.

It’s 1994 and the tight-knit mining community of Grimley, Yorkshire, are fighting to keep their colliery open. Meanwhile, revered band leader, Danny, battles to keep his dispirited band of brass-playing miners together with the dream of qualifying for the National Championships at London’s Albert Hall.

When the uncertainty around the pit’s future becomes too much for the band members, loyalty is tested, pressure mounts and the community begins to break apart. With their whole way of life at stake, can the band find a way to play on?

Based on the smash-hit film, Brassed Off is a much-loved modern classic, full of grit, heart and northern humour. This production will feature live music from local brass bands to deliver a soul-stirring theatrical experience.

About the role:

The Associate Director will work closely with the Director and creative team throughout the process, including leading rehearsals for the youth cast in each of the three co-producing venues. The Associate Director role will involve a considerable amount of travel between the co-producing venues to audition, rehearse, and tech in the youth cast at each venue.

Responsibilities include:

- Independent research to create an actor pack and research process in advance of rehearsals

- Leading auditions for the youth cast at Theatre by the Lake and in co-producing venues

- Leading rehearsals with the youth cast. This will largely be independent of the Director, although she may join at certain points
