POINT OF NO RETURN IMPROV

THEME: PNR STOPS BULLYING

It’s September, school has kicked off, and we’re putting our foot down to stomp out bullying. Through laughter, drinking, and the power of friendship, bullying will end around the world. HELP STOP BULLYING!

Point of No Return Improv  is a PG-13 medium-form improv comedy group. They provide an interactive comedy experience; spontaneously creating scenes based on audience suggestions. Brave volunteers may even find themselves on stage being serenaded or used as props by the cast. PNR Improv is part theatre, part comedy, and wholly fun!

MARILYN DEFRANGE BAND

Marilyn DeFrange, originally from Kent Ohio, has been singing and writing music since childhood. Her music can best be described as a semi-acoustic eclectic mix with a rhythm and blues influence. Marilyn‘s voice keeps a connection with the audience that runs the gambit from a delicate whisper to a full blown bluesy wail. Her catalog of original songs also include a refreshing take on covers such as Over The Rainbow, Midnight Train to Georgia, Fever, Track’s of My Tears and Moondance. Living in both Northern California and Ohio, she has recorded and or performed with David Hayes, Bonnie Raitt, Alex DeGrassi, Paul McCandless, David Raitt, Spencer Brewer, Stratus, Paradise, The Mike Reid Band, Denis DeFrange, Fred Tribuzzo, Rod Reisman, (Baby Sirloin), Terry Hynde, (Numbers Band) Keith Chelm (Jump the Gun) and Will Siegel (Willy and the Nighthawks). Her voice, songwriting and producing skills can be found on many of her peers’ CD’s. Some include, Someone to Hold, The Nighthawk Strikes, Future, Something Good and Ocean of Emotion.

The Marilyn DeFrange Band includes two of the past bandmates from the Kent band, Baby Sirloin. The musicians, Fred Tribuzzo on bass and guitar and Rod Reisman on drums, Keith Chelm on keyboards and Terry Hynde on sax and bass clarinet give the listener a mix of familiar and undeniable chemistry. Collectively, they have played together in a variety of groups, on recording projects and on live radio broadcasts for many years.

DUKE TUMATOE & THE POWER TRIO

You may remember him as the leader of the All-Star Frogs (1970-1983) and the Power Trio (1983-present), doing humorous and raunchy blues originals such as “Tie You Up!” and “More Love, More Money”. You may remember the Tumatoe tours of local clubs and endless spins of his songs on college radio in the ’70s and ’80s. You may not know that he played in a FIJI house band (Lothar and the Hand People) at the University of Illinois, the band name created by Bill Geist, CBS Sunday Morning News Correspondent; recorded for Warner Bros. (I Like My Job, produced by John Fogerty of Creedence Clearwater Revival fame); and was a member of REO Speedwagon — he left in 1969, evidently taking all rocking bluesy rootsy-ness with him — and he grew up on the South Side of Chicago, a blues-loving youth who hung with the legends. Now he’s still at it, playing over 200 shows a year, covering over 60,000 miles. Tumatoe promises “A good time, a little mischief, a lot of great music.”

The man who couldn’t resist titling his 2001 holiday album “It’s Christmas (Let’s Have Sex)” would like people to know he’s not all about the joke. “There’s a great deal of musical ability in the band,” Tumatoe said. They focus on the music, “just as much as on the twists in the lyrical content.” Tumatoe learned drums at 10, moved to guitar as a teen, and became active playing in the Chicago area in the ’60s. He grew up on the South Side, in the exact time and space of the golden era of electric blues. He knew, and played with, the greats, and now can’t believe that he took that for granted as a kid, Tumatoe said. “Those guys were kinda like available, just as a natural course of daily activity. … You never thought it was such an earth-shaking experience to have grown up in the crux of all that but it really, really is.” Tumatoe knew all the “old guys,” he said, ran into them every day. “Played with a lot of them,” Tumatoe said. “Muddy (Waters), Willie Dixon, Bo Diddley — who’s still with us — Buddy Guy — who’s still with us … Albert King, J.B. Hutto. …

Having grown up in that city, you just experience that stuff.” Duke’s fans consider him one of music’s best-kept secrets and they selfishly admit they want to keep it that way. They know his show will be one of those sweaty, anything can happen things and they look forward to the freely dispensed and practical advice from the Doctor (”When you’re in a basement you should drink whiskey”).

BUZZ CLIC ADVENTURE

Buzz Clic is best known as the lead guitarist for the punk rock band that put Akron on the map, the Rubber City Rebels.

“If you've lived in the Rubber City long enough, you know the "Akron Sound" describes a punk-music era that hit a high pitch in the 1970s, influenced music aficionados around the world and disappeared almost as quickly as it arose.

But at its peak, the Akron Sound drew famous music critics to Ohio and prompted venues in London to hold contests that sent lucky winners on all-expenses-paid trips to the Rubber City. And, it spun out bands like DEVO, Rubber City Rebels, Hammer Damage, Tin Huey, The Waitresses, Rachael Sweet, Bizarros and Chi-Pig.

Clic, who left for Los Angeles with the Rebels in the '70s, got signed and toured the world, has issued three volumes of original music with the Buzz Clic Adventure.

These days, Clic is happy living in Southern California, writing music and performing with his three-piece Buzz Clic Adventure, which includes Dan Nastro on drums and Ryan Saul on bass/vocals.

The Buzz Clic Adventure released "Return from Nowhere" in 2015 and is currently finishing a new, untitled album set for release later his year.”

"I'm still doing exactly what I want," Clic said.

CAN'T LET GO: THE LAST HIFIs SHOW

In October of last year, the HiFis lost two foundational members over the course of 3 days, Chuck Keith and Denny Coyle which, effectively, ended the band.

Their last gig, which took place at Jilly’s Music Room just the previous August, was video streamed with audio multitrack recorded. The audio has been mixed to Austin City Limits quality, synched with the original streaming video, resulting in 13 songs from that, the last HiFis show, along with another 4, from February 2023, to be screened on that very same stage.

So if you were there, come enjoy the memories, eat, drink, dance, laugh, hug. If you weren’t, here’s your chance to bid a fond farewell. If you’ve never seen The HiFis, well, it’ll knock your socks off.

Additionally, the remaining members, original HiFi Rich Roberts, Tren Houseman, and Harvey Gold will be joined by dearest of friends, Jack Kidney, of The Numbers Band, and Tracey Thomas, Renaissance Woman and lead singer for The Crones, to play just a few of Chuck’s songs.

From the remaining HiFis:

“Please come. We’ve missed playing with you all. And bring a little extra for the Live album on CD that we’ll be unveiling. It will also be available for download on Bandcamp. All proceeds will go to what is being called (Chuck would approve) ‘The HiFis Legacy Fund’.”
