Over the past three years, I have been visiting the Jewish Federation of Omaha several times a week, and the most evident change I’ve witnessed is the increased activity throughout the Staenberg Kooper Fellman Campus. It is amazing to see the multitude of people using the facility. The various agencies of the JFO have continued to create new programs and events, attracting over 25,000 participants from January until now. And this number does not include the many community members who work out daily at the Staenberg Omaha JCC, visit loved ones at the Rose Blumkin Jewish Home, check out books from our Kripke-Veret collection, or come in to view the rotating exhibits in the Eisenberg Art Gallery.

In his most recent update, Phil Malcom invited each of you to stop by the JFO and learn about the many opportunities we offer to get involved and participate in our vibrant and ever-changing Omaha Jewish community. I’d like to second his invitation and highlight just a few of the upcoming events that might entice you to make a visit:

Rosh Hashanah Challah Tots

Thursday, September 7th – 9:30-10:30am

PJ Library tots will join residents of the Rose Blumkin Home as we prepare for the New Year with apple sauce, honey and making our own traditional round challah. (Regularly scheduled Challah Tots with partner Friedel Jewish Academy will be held October 12, 2023 and March 28, 2024.)

Sundays with Shani & Mushka

Sunday, September 10th – 2-3pm

This Jewish learning event is being led by Chabad’s Shani Katzman and Mushka Tenenbaum. The discussion will focus on reconciliation and recommitment with the High Holidays quickly approaching.

Third Thursdays Lunch & Learn Series

Thursday, September 21st – 11:30am-1pm

via Zoom

The Institute for Holocaust Education hosts Jewish Family Service’s Dr. Hillary Rubesin as she presents "Where Does Your Heart Feel Safe and Happy." The discussion will focus on how the expressive arts are particularly effective within cross-cultural, cross-lingual, and trauma-informed therapy.

Introduction to Judaism

October 2023-January 2024

Naomi Fox will be teaching this 12-session program covering the Jewish holidays, life cycle celebrations, Israel, and more. For more information, contact Naomi Fox at nfox@jewishomaha.org.

This is just a sample of the diverse program offerings here at the JFO. Through the programs listed above, and in so many other ways, the JFO is working to help us all build new and more meaningful connections, whether those are with our friends, our family, our faith, our ourselves. As we enter fall and the beginning of the Jewish New Year, I encourage you to delve into something new and discover what relationships you can develop and nurture. Check out the Shalomaha Community Calendar to find a complete listing of events for community members of all ages.

Shabbat Shalom,

Mike Siegel
