A birthday is a time for celebration — a time to eat cake, open presents, and feel special. It is a yearly tradition every child looks forward to. Unfortunately, some in our community cannot afford weekly groceries, let alone a modest birthday party. We know the toll it takes on parents when they cannot provide for their children, and every birthday that passes can be another painful reminder to the entire family about what they do not have. Where can parents turn to ensure their children are provided for?

At JFCS, we are happy to be the lifeline that so many parents reach for. While our food pantry offers food, it also provides so much more. It is a place to get all of life's many needs, such as dental products, school supplies, baby products, and yes, birthday supplies! Cake mixes, frosting, party favors, decorations, and presents are given to families who request them. The joy these supplies bring to the parents we serve is incalculable. They know that no child should miss out on celebrating their birthdays and appreciate JFCS's thoughtfulness in having these items available.

We recently assisted a single father of two daughters. He had been facing financial difficulties and was using our food pantry to ease some of his burden. His younger daughter's birthday was approaching, and he was heartbroken that he could not afford to make it special for her. When he saw the birthday kits we provide, his joy was palpable. He expressed his immense gratitude and shared that his daughter was overjoyed to have a party this year. She was particularly thrilled with the balloons and the Play-Doh kit she received as a present. She declared it to be the “best birthday ever!”

It is the small things in life that often bring us the greatest joy, and seeing your child smile from having a happy birthday is reflective of the relief and support we hope to bring to every parent in need.

Dear JFCS Family,

As the end of this fiscal year approaches, I want to thank all of you who support JFCS and our work.

From the parent whose family’s survival depends on our Corner Market Food Pantry to the adolescent receiving life-affirming psychotherapy to the homebound older adult whose lifeline is care management, JFCS is ready to help.

This year has been particularly stressful, as we all know, and our community needs the programs and services of JFCS to be stronger than ever.

May we continue to go from strength to strength, providing hope.

With deep gratitude,

Susan
