JF&CS CEO Gail Schulman touching mezuzah

Dear Sarah,

Like many of you, I’m looking forward to the change of pace that summer brings. And yet, for our work at JF&CS, I’m all too aware that summer presents its own challenges.

For families with children, the end of the school year brings the disruption of familiar routines and the loss of supports like the school social worker. Additional expenses, such as for childcare, pile up.

Those well past school age face challenges too. As family members and neighbors make summer plans, isolation can become an unexpected problem for older adults.

We are here for the community all summer long. Human problems don’t disappear during the summer, and neither do we. We’re hosting parent support groups and Memory Cafés, our day program and residential programs for adults with disabilities are in full swing, and much more.

This is a time of year when we sometimes see fewer volunteers. Please know that we need you more than ever, especially at Family Table.

If you want to get a peek of life at JF&CS over the summer, please read on—or, better yet, come by and volunteer!

Gail Schulman

Chief Executive Officer

P.S. As you can see, there’s a new mezuzah on my office door—read all the way to the end for its remarkable story!

Summer days at CHAI Works

School may be out, but CHAI Works—our community-based day program for adults with disabilities—continues all summer long, providing meaningful days for participants and respite for families. As more of our activities turn outdoors, participants are enjoying sailing, attending baseball games, volunteering at local nonprofits, and building skills while tending their onsite garden.

Would you like to share your talents with our CHAI community? We’re always looking for volunteers to lead activities with our community.

Bet Tzedek attorney wins Lottor Award

Kate Billman-Golemme, a pro bono attorney with JF&CS Bet Tzedek Legal Services, was chosen out of our more than 2,000 annual volunteers to receive this year’s Simone Lottor Exceptional Service Award. Collaborating closely with our legal services and aging life care teams, Kate contributed literally hundreds of hours to prevent a 90-year-old client from being unjustly evicted from his home. As the Talmud says, “Whoever saves one life, it is as if they saved the entire world.”

If you are a lawyer interested in pro bono work, please consider volunteering with JF&CS Bet Tzedek Legal Services and help protect the rights of vulnerable people in our community.

Celebrating the resilience of our Parkinsons community

More than 60 people gathered to sing, dance, share stories, and even whistle at the Art of Resilience, the annual celebration of the Charlotte & Richard Okonow Parkinson's Family Support Program at JF&CS. Guests enjoyed a Tremble Clefs performance, grooved to Beyoncé with our Parkinson’s dance leader, and heard a moving tale of personal growth in the face of illness from a participant in our storytelling initiative.

If you or someone you know has Parkinson’s disease, we encourage you to explore our arts-based therapeutic activities and resources for people navigating all stages of the disease.

Meet our new Board members

New JF&CS Board members: Karen Deresiewicz, Gayle Dublin, Adam Suttin

JF&CS recently welcomed three community leaders to our Board of Directors. Karen Deresiewicz has decades of experience working in human resources at Harvard University and has volunteered with JF&CS at both Family Table and Journey to Safety, as well as with CJP. Gayle Dublin is a retired social worker who worked with adolescents in residential and outpatient settings; she's also a long-time JF&CS volunteer, serving on the CHAI Services and Human Rights committees and helping out at Family Table on the North Shore. Adam Suttin is the managing partner of a private equity firm, and an active community volunteer. He’s served as board member, treasurer or board chair at the Jewish Community Relations Council, CJP, Gann Academy, JVS, and Temple Emanuel, and is an active member of the Finance Committee of JF&CS. We are so grateful to Karen, Gayle, and Adam for their service!
