After The Earthquake: JETAA's Response

As the world has watched the unfolding devastation caused by the March 11 earthquake and tsunami in Japan, JETAA members have been especially affected. Many of us have friends or even family in the hardest hit areas, and some have spent days trying to contact people amid unreliable phone networks and power blackouts.
There are many positive stories: people connecting with loved ones or of dramatic rescues in the news; but there is also destruction, fear and loss of life. Seeing this happen to a country we lived in, and to the people we came to know and love has been hard, when most of us are far away and seemingly unable to help.
But we are not helpless. We can lend our support in many ways. That is why on April 1, JETAA Toronto will host a special fundraising event in support of the rescue, relief and rebuilding efforts so needed in Japan.
The event will take place at the Hard Rock Caf. There will be live music and a silent auction with trips to New York, CN Tower tours and other prizes with all proceeds going to the Canadian Red Cross's efforts in Japan. For more on our fundraising efforts please see this article.
We urge you to come out, gather your friends and family and support this important event.
Check out our facebook event page or contact japanrelief@jetaatoronto.ca for more information.
Date: Friday, April 1, 2011
Time: 8pm til 2am
Place: Hard Rock Caf, 279 Yonge St., ( map) South of Yonge and Dundas Sq.

CBC REPORTER LOOKING FOR HIGH PARK SAKURA INFO
From CBC Toronto reporter, and former JET, Kimberly Gale:
It seems each year we film the beautiful blossoms in High Park, but never tell the full story. As a former JET (Iwaki, Fukushima 2003-04) I have some understanding of the importance. I am hoping to tell the full story this year, which is why I am contacting you ahead of the blooms. I will be conducting interviews and doing research before the Hanami in late April. I am looking for members of Toronto's Japanese community who don't mind being interviewed for both radio and television and who can talk about the cultural and historical significance of the trees. I understand that the Japanese ambassador to Canada presented some trees to the city in 1959 in appreciation of Toronto accepting re-located Japanese Canadians following WWII. I am hoping to connect with some of those families here in Toronto. I do respect and understand that some of those stories-of interned Japanese Canadians-may be difficult to tell. I also wonder if anyone knows Yoriki and Midori Iwasaki-who donated some of the trees in 1984?
