June Primary Election

In a Primary Election, voters choose the November general election nominees of the three full-status parties - Democratic, Libertarian and Republican. Each party has its own ballot listing only candidates from that party. In order to vote in the primary election, voters must declare a party affiliation. Voters can change affiliation at the time they vote or request a mailed ballot.

Voting dates in June:

·        Saturday, June 1: Auditor's Office required by law to be open for early voting.

·        Monday, June 3: Last day for in-person early voting.

·        Tuesday, June 4: Election Day. Polls open 7:00 am - 8:00 pm. Mailed absentee ballots must be returned by 8:00 pm

The Press-Citizen has compiled a list of Johnson County candidates and the surrounding area. You can find it here.

Juneteenth commemorates the end of slavery in the United States. On June 19, 1865, two-and-a-half years after the Emancipation Proclamation, Union soldiers sailed into Galveston, Texas, and read aloud the order, freeing a quarter of a million slaves who were residing in the state.

Juneteenth events will be held throughout Johnson County around the holiday. Visit icjuneteenth.com to see the many ways you can celebrate!

Iowa Underground Railroad Trip with ICSC’s

Original Mature Groovers

Saturday, June 8, 9am-3pm

In the mid-1800s, Iowa, a free state, experienced ramifications from systemic slavery practiced by southern states, particularly Missouri. Enslaved people attempted to make their way to freedom through many routes in Iowa which led to northern cities and Canada. Networks of people dedicated to helping the freedom seekers formed and came to be called the under-ground railroad. The Senior Center’s Original Mature Groovers invite you to join on a journey exploring sites and history of the Underground Railroad in southeast Iowa; and an opportunity to deepen relationships with others in your chapter. More details coming soon.

Fee includes transportation; participants pay for their own lunch. Fee: $70 ($40 for participants in ICSC’s low-income membership program); pay ICSC at registration.

2024 Older Americans Month Wrap-Up

Volunteers from the Johnson County Livable Community Policy Board accepted Proclamations at all of the municipalities within Johnson County during the month of May in honor of Older Americans Month.

CALLING ALL ADULT CHILDREN CARING FOR OLDER LOVED ONES!

Are you an informal caregiver for an older adult? If so, then you know that supporting an aging loved one comes with a wide range of emotions and challenges.

To serve this growing community, Jennifer Jones and Ceil Miller-Bouchet—both adult children experiencing caregiving for older parents—are organizing a group where adult children caregivers (or future caregivers) can share information, find community, and learn from experts about the many topics involved with accompanying an older adult on their aging journey.

Please join us for an initial open house from 10am – 12pm on Thursday, July 11, 2024, at the Csomay Center for Gerontological Excellence (room 435) located in the College of Nursing, 50 Newton Road, University of Iowa.

This will be a very informal gathering where we will share our needs, wants, and goals for this new support group. Feel free to stop by for a few minutes or for the entire time. The Csomay Center mission is to promote optimal aging and quality of life for all older adults and their caregivers. Serving as a resource hub for community members and organizations, they have the vision that every older adult receives the care they want when they want.

Please register by July 1, 2024, by contacting Jennifer Jones at the Csomay Center, Jennifer-e-jones@uiowa.edu,. And if you can’t attend but have suggestions or questions, feel free to get in touch.

Parking is available in the Newton Road Ramp parking garage. There are also bus stops conveniently located in front of the College of Nursing.

Please join us to be a part of this planning process!
