Battalion Chief Mark Akins retires

City Council recently recognized retired Battalion Chief William Mark Akins for his 43 years of fire service and noted his years of service in Johns Creek. Enjoy your retirement!

As holiday celebrations occur, the Johns Creek Fire Department reminds residents of the fireworks law and fireworks safety tips.

As of July 1, 2018, the Georgia General Assembly adjusted the law regarding when fireworks can be used and how they may be regulated.

The law (HB 419) allows consumer fireworks to be used or ignited at the following times:

1. Any day beginning at 10 a.m. and ending at 11:59 p.m.

(unless such use or ignition during such times is not in compliance with the local noise ordinance in effect in that jurisdiction) The City of Johns Creek follows state law and the city noise ordinance. It is prohibited to use or ignite fireworks in the city’s public parks without an approved written permit from the City of Johns Creek.

2. The use of fireworks is legal until 11:59 p.m. statewide around certain holidays (regardless of local legislation):

  • on Jan. 1,
  • the last Saturday and Sunday in May (before Memorial Day),
  • July 3 & July 4,
  • the first Monday in September (Labor Day),
  • Dec. 31, 10 a.m. to 11:59 p.m. time period; and Jan. 1 from 12 a.m. (midnight) to 1 a.m.
  • For noise complaints, residents can call 911.

Outdoor burn ban in effect through Sept. 30

A state-mandated burn ban on all outdoor burning of debris is in effect through Sept. 30.

The Georgia Environmental Protection Division imposes the ban to comply with Federal Clean Air Regulations.

According to the Georgia Forestry Commission, careless burning of debris is the leading cause of wildfires in Georgia.

Stay safe while grilling this summer

Before you barbecue, here are a few key tips to cook safely outdoors:

  1. Keep your grill away from the house and deck railings
  2. Read your grill manual to ensure proper use, especially turning on and off the grill
  3. Always make sure the grill lid is open before lighting it

Stay safe while enjoying the Chattahoochee River

Viewed from a distance, the Chattahoochee River looks like a languid, easy-going river, but its appearance can be dangerously deceptive. When the Corps of Engineers releases water from Lake Lanier, the resulting surge of water can cause the river to rise several feet in a short amount of time.

JCFD debuts its latest vehicle

The Johns Creek Fire Department’s latest Air and Light Unit has arrived and is in service!

The custom-built vehicle is equipped with a compressor for filling self-contained breathing apparatus (commonly referred to as an air pack), which each firefighter wears while fighting a fire.

The new vehicle holds specialized flood lights to illuminate an incident scene and it can also be set up as a mobile rehabilitation unit for long-term public safety incidents.

This state-of-the-art unit is another innovative way the City continues to support health, wellness, and safety both in the community and for our public safety personnel.
