gallery talk :: new exhibition

tuesday july 9

OUR SUMMER/FALL EXHIBITION OPENS officially on Tuesday July 9 at 3 PM with a Gallery Talk with Curator Daniel Zaccardi in the Jaffe Book Arts Gallery. It's an exhibition we're calling By Our Own Labor: The History and Contemporary Field of Hand Papermaking.

The premise: For many centuries, prior to the invention of machine-made paper in 1799, all paper was made by hand, by a skilled craftsperson. Today hundreds of artists, craftspeople, historians, conservators, and others make and utilize handmade papers. For this exhibition we have assembled various paper artifacts, specimens, materials, books, works of art, equipment, and other pieces into a narrative of paper’s long history, from a ubiquitous utilitarian handmade commodity to a diverse realm of artistic experimentation and development. We invite you to come and gain a greater appreciation for the material that has made our world: paper.

The event: Curator's Talk with Daniel Zaccardi on Tuesday July 9 at 3 PM. Free, open to all, in the Jaffe Book Arts Gallery (third floor east of FAU's Wimberly Library). We'll be screening three short films about papermaking before Daniel's comments and Q+A. This is our studio coordinator's last gift to JCBA before heading off to pursue an MFA in the Book Arts at the University of Iowa... so please come and please join us in wishing Daniel the best!

The exhibition runs well into December, so you have plenty of time to see it, but only this one chance to meet the curator and see our film selections. Please do read the webpage for the exhibition before coming... the Wimberly Library is currently under renovation, and you'll want to read the page to learn more about where to enter the building (N.B.: it's at the far east end, through what is typically an emergency exit).

We look forward to your presence on Tuesday July 9 at 3 PM. The program should run about 60 to 90 minutes. Free, no reservations required. In-house only... but we'll see if we can come up with something interesting for the folks in Zoomland later as the exhibition progresses.

WE'RE BACK ON FRIDAY with our next Real Mail Fridays Zoom Social. it's crunch time

THE DEADLINE IS FAST APPROACHING for applications as we seek our next Helen M. Salzberg Artist in Residence. This Salzberg Residency earns its recipient a stipend of $8,000. In exchange, the Salzberg Resident must be in residence here at JCBA for at least 30 days (which may be in one block or divided), must teach a workshop (either in-house or online), and must complete a creative project. The full breadth of the Jaffe Collection and the studios of the Jaffe Center for Book Arts are here for the resident's research and creative work. Applications must be postmarked by August 5, 2024 (or brought to us by August 5, if you're delivering yourself). CLICK HERE for full details and application information.

bring a group!

AS THE LANGUID SUMMER DAYS go on (and on), keep in mind that it's cool in here and there's probably no better time for a Florida adventure of the indoor sort. We offer you a fascinating one-hour artists' books presentation (anytime, all year long... but summer is the very best time of year to do so, as parking is a breeze while the vast majority of our university students are away). Perfect for you and your book club, art club, social group, or gaggle of friends and relatives: Gather anywhere from 8 to 24 people and we'd love to show you what JCBA is all about. You'll never look at books the same way again. Email me, JCBA Director John Cutrone, to learn more and to schedule your visit: CLICK HERE for a link to our Staff Contact page at the JCBA website; write me from there!
